Having just seen a program about drugs where a man was shown saying people should buy bitcoin anonymously and then use it to purchase drugs from abroad then yes the bit coin is used by some for nefarious purposes. It's origin silk road was for moving large tokens of value between organisations and borders without government interference. People can invest how they wish. Interestingly the USD bit coin trading on the Chicago stock exchange opened up on Sunday. I believe one can place long or short bets over different periods to buy or sell bitcoin. Too squeaky buttock 4 me.
I hope the investors get millions back for their bets. Some will probably remove twice their original stake when the price has quadrupled knowing they cannot possibly lose on the deal after that.
I don't think I have made any accusations about any posters, implied or direct, that could possibly attract vitriolic comments or censure by mods.

Newsflash: cash/fiat currency/bank notes are often also used for nefarious and "dark" activities as well...

Hertfordshire news were reporting on Monday what is believed to be the first house paid for with Bitcoin so small steps on the way to mainstream who knows (leaving aside estate agent jokes ) But even if it or another crypto currency are used i assume they move outside the financial reporting systems at the moment hence their appeal to some.A bit like every American crime film from the 60's -80's seemed to feature bearer bonds as i believe there was no registration on them.

Although I held some bitcoins pretty early on after I heard about them on a pretty obscure podcast and I sold them before they took off. Do I regret it? Sure but I also regret not buying the winning lottery ticket. I dont believe in their "value" any more now than I did then and see this as the biggest bubble of all time.

I think the itchy hippy has some very good pointers on how to view several things including crypto currencies.

I Bought £100 of bitcoin at about £12/BTC in 2011, It promptly crashed to below £2/BTC and I chalked it up as a lesson learnt.
Eventually it rallied and I sold out at approx £450/BTC for a few grand profit in 2013 as I thought it was overvalued. Retrospectively this was a good time to sell as it then slid back down to below £100/BTC.
I didn't rebuy at below £100/BTC as I had put all my free cash into a deposit for a house.
IMHO, the current bitcoin price is far above its value. If I had to make a guess, I'd say it will be trading at approx £3000 after the next crash.

Pretty much all cryptocurrencies have crashed 30% over the last 24 hours or so...

I appear to owe certain people on this thread an apology. However, I plead my innocence as I was P2P Forum equivalent of FRAPED (for those of you that do not know, FRAPED is a reference to Facebook and what happens when you leave yourself logged in and you leave your computer unattended!).
I thought ozboy was going mad when I read through the answers on this thread, but then 2 of my friends admitted their heinous crime that was committed when I went to pick up the pizza for a poker night!!
Oh well, that will teach me not to lock my computer when I go out! Sorry Ozboy! (And @bobo too I think from what my detective skills can ascertain from the thread? Lol)
Fear not fellow forumites, they have paid their penance! They have had to buy me beers all night!

Been diversifying the old P2P portfolio a bit and have dappled in Bitcoin via a few wallets for few months but like others say Coinbase is easiest and have also got hardware wallet - am happy to answer any questions. Yes it may crash tomorrow but still think it represents less risk/better return than some of the P2P offerings discussed here.
MODS - feel free to remove below if not allowed
If anyone wants a link to sign up to Coinbase please PM me (we both get $10 free once you buy $100 of any cryptocurrency)

Another tip for those who are new/ don't want the hassle of hardware / 2FAs etc. is to get a Revolut card.
I bought about £1,500 before Christmas (£500 in each Litecoin/Bitcoin/Ethereum) just to see how easy it was. The process was no different to swapping GBP for EUR or USD. 10/10.
Note: you need a premium account with Revolut which is about £6 a month.

I ended up going with Kraken as I liked the look of their security setup. Crypto is held offline in an air gapped cold storage facility that is under armed guard!!
This along with the fact that access to my coins is via 2FA with a different 2FA to make withdrawals and a further 2FA to make changes to my account give me a fairly secure feeling.
They don't have all the Altcoins that I wanted, but they have enough for now. There are lots of exchanges offering access to 1200+ Altcoins, but they have no track record so I will wait until I can find a proven site that does more low value high volume coins.
