Very irritating press release by Gatwick environmental campaigners about how lovely and quiet it is .... the runway is closed until at least 6am ... which means most of the long haul flights due into Gatwick 4am onwards tomorrow (mostly now airbourne) will almost certainly now join the dozens of flights over central London (and my house ! ) into Heathrow at that time of day.

I read that the authorities had an opportunity to shoot the drone down, but declined to do so because of the danger when the bullet returned to earth. I think it would have been worth the risk. Thousands of bullets are fired into the air annually around the world for various reasons and the chance of injury, let alone serious injury, is vanishingly small. Besides, planes regularly drop massive chunks of ice down to earth which occasionally destroy half a house, so I think the risk from a few grammes of metal could be justified.
Had they done so, they would have captured a huge load of forensic evidence (fingerprints, DNA, technological evidence like a camera with memory in it, etc, etc) and this chaos have been cleared up quickly and the teenagers responsible given a slap on the wrist.

I read (probably bs) that 'retail' drones have a limiter preventing them from entering restricted areas. It can be overridden, but would require a certain level of skill. Anyone know? Don’t own one, but an “expert” on the radio on drive home was saying that standard (and she was referring more to professional than simply retail but didn’t exclude the latter) were equipped with “geo fencing”, as its called. But frankly I would have thought experience tells us these things can be hacked/overridden by a spotty teenager sitting in their bedroom faster than we can scratch our (balding) heads and look up the meaning of “geo fencing” on Wikipedia. (No offence to any teenager, spotty or otherwise. trust me, i wish I was ‘back there’). It is becoming increasingly obvious though that this is not only pre-meditated but also possibly considerably planned. Battery life, battery saving, or battery changing. If the latter that is a considerably more pre and well planned exercise. Putin, or an Elon Musk stunt to demonstrate the longevity of some ground breaking new battery technology ?

Go on , run to your parent's closet. I bet they got you a drone for Xmas.

I ticked ISIS and Labour Party supporters. Although probably one and the same. And probably Spotty Teenagers as well.

I believe an Arsenal fan (its a football team) has claimed he could bring it down with a plastic bottle and has offered his services to the police (seems they were looking for him even before).
Obviously against extra terrestrial technology this would not work.

How much explosive could a drone carry as an attack on a plane? Terrorists of some sort possibly or just an absolute idiot, well more than one to perpetuate this I would think.

Commercial danger is similar to bird strike, not transporting explosives. Military have problems when a lot of helicopter transports are involved, as in Kabul. Also limited intelligence gathering over compounds. Best result propaganda nuisance value as at Gatwick. Best reaction would be calm tolerance and patience in the face of adversity(like shafted P2P members) rather than Mr and Mrs ' I WAS DISGUSTED' of Crawley. The Media is having a field day ,of course

Why Gatwick? Yeah , def Putin, I reckon its Spetsnaz looking to kidnap Princess Ann. All they needed to do was ask and we'd wrap her in cheery paper, tie it with a nice ribbon, and put the package under the tree in Red Square.

Slightly off topic (I am being generous in the use of topic, I quite like threads that meander) I have a 'secret womble' thing going on and tend to pick up rubbish in the streets and take it to a bin (of which there are plenty where I tend to walk) anything that saves me doing that, I would fully support. Obviously there is a possible money making possibility as well if 5p refunds are introduced, which I would strongly support.

I am a bit baffled about this story in general. These drones sound large compared to the ones you find in retail outlets. That suggests to me that they are either expensive or home built using specialist parts. Either way, they are rare and probably trackable. I believe Govt policy is to scramble jets and shoot down hijacked aircraft if they have to - presumably with considerable loss of life. Yet, for these drones they are worried about a sharp shooter having a go and a possible stray bullet. That suggests they don't regard them as an actual threat to life - but in the nuisance/pranking category. My suspicion is they know who is behind it but have reasons to keep quiet.

There might be a bit of an outrage. Especially from the Badminton crowd.
