radar has suggested a useful link..worth looking at that..even if W10 'messed' everything up a system restore should/will reset an OS no matter what the current configuration. You mention your lappy is old ?..im using a 8yr old Acer Notebook that came with W7..and has used W8 and now 10 successfully..if 8.1 was your original OS the old installation files were probably saved in a Win.old file which may have expired/deleted automatically..

I got so frustrated that I bought a MacBookPro , but the old Toshiba is still about I may look at getting that 8.1 but I expect there will be an activation code problem as I doubt there will still be one in the old files as I have messed about too much

Oh good..so uve got something..there are so many unanswered questions when folk say they have a problem..was it new..a legal copy etc etc but im sure in the very distant past i used a MSoft link to download a Win7 OS onto a DVD and ran a system restore from that to get me back up and running when id trashed the thing and all hope seemed lost. Ive used Win95 98 98SE XP 7 8 & now 10 over the years ..I know naff all technically..just picked up stuff as ive gone along. One thing i would recommend though..if u havent already got...pick up a portable HD..ive got a 1TB Samsung..xmas time cheap as chips on Amazon..and periodically (after a major update) save a system image (not a backup)..in case the worst happens then you can restore to the last good state rather than back to zero and lose everything..saved me some major grief more than once

Can you not go back to your W8 ? Im still on windows 7 .. works okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk for me most of the tome....keyboards a tit iffy now and then .. but ..

Ive used Win95 98 98SE XP 7 8 & now 10 over the years .. I was a frequent user of Windows 3.1 and 3.2, but recall back in the good old days (circa 1988) my employer had a copy of Windows 1.0 on a series of floppy disks

I'm pretty sure my windows 7 is still getting sec updates until next Jan 2020 well it was the last time i looked. I'm sure larger business's will have paying options to maintain it but us poor ordinary minions will not be able to afford that kind of deal.
W10 has had a somewhat chequered 2018, especially the Oct release that trashed many people systems and was withdrawn with some serious egg on MS faces. It back up now but a good few people got their machines lost for days on end and some never recovered. ( a good backup routine pays dividends for any serious user in my eyes.)
The thing is I've been in and around many systems over the last 30 odd years from MF's to PC's laptops to downright "toys" (tablets and phones). Windows 7 has IMHO been the most successful MS being to date and still is in my eyes. I've helped family members keep 8.0,8.1 and now 10 working for a good while since I retired but I've seen nothing on any of those systems to tempt me away from 7 so far.
Just some thoughts from a luddite so hopefully I won't get lambasted by others.
I agree 100% with others though regarding business and licenses etc it's just not worth it both financially and reputationally.

I'm pretty sure my windows 7 is still getting sec updates until next Jan 2020 well it was the last time i looked. The answer from the horses mouth can be found here:
The above link includes the exact definition of exactly "what" you are getting in the Extended Support period (to save you the time looking for it, the table is here support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14085)
It seems MS have already changed the page on your second link as I'm getting a 404 on that. If I've understood the info on the first link, and followed through to the FAQs page, I think the support might run until January 2020. Is that your understanding?
