Shoots are now so popular, that the quantity of birds killed outstrips the market for them, and so are often simply stuffed into pits. Where does that fit in with the country idyll ?
.
I only work my dog on two small shoots. I get about 12 + pheasants from one shoot. I try to get the same from another but the owner has wild life sanctuary and the wolves lions and crocodiles find them quite tasty. Once his freezers are full I try get 12 or more again. I give loads to one woman who is particularly skint and on basic benefits but won't part with her horse. She gives me a few back skinned for my freezer. I give more to another family who give me pheasant pie and pasty in exchange and sometimes a chocolate cake. Long may there be an excess on the shoots I work.

Years ago a friend of mine at work went on a shoot and brought me a brace back. They went into the fridges in the canteen (probably breaking every health and safety law known to mankind) and I collected them at the end of the day. Two dead pheasants. Not gutted. Not plucked. In a plastic bag.....
On the Central Line.
Which, apart from being rammed, was fine until we got stuck just outside Tottenham Court Road. It was hot, very hot. And so, of course, somebody squeezed up against me, putting pressure on the carrier bag containing the pheasants. The fetid rank miasma that escaped, and pervaded the whole carriage for what seemed like an eternity, was.... indescribable.
When we eventually got in to the platform I bolted (with pheasants) and caught a cab.
Apologies if you were in that carriage with me.

That is not a surplus. Its sufficient.
