I have a rule that I think people might like to follow
"Never, ever buy an asset unless you have already worked out at what price you want to sell it"

FWIW I have used the Halifax sharebuilder account for a number of years. If you use the designated buying days (4 a month) buying is £2 + and stamp duty. Selling is usually around £12 per deal. They do have special offers once a month where you can sell for £4 during a 2 hour window. Their research platform is ok to moderate. It may not be all singing and dancing but it has been working well for me for many years.

I find that iweb works well and economically. I see the joining fee has gone up from £40 to £100 since I started and they let me off that when I opened 2 accounts, as I complained when they delayed opening because they rejected my French driving license for having no expiry date. No annual charge and £5 dealing fee.
