The Companies don't have to pay you at all for export, some are paying as little as 1.5p per unit I believe Octopus pay 7.5p fixed or you can have a tariff called Agile which pays market rates. EON told me when I had panels installed they didn't pay. At the moment agile is paying about 30p kWh for output, but agile import is at 35p, Over the last week I've averaged 50p, 34p, 48P, 37P, 41P, 34p, and 24p per kWh exported the "average" average is 38.5P a unit. the economics of Solar are becoming better. For example my system when installed should have paid for itself over 14 years, when Electricity jumped to 16p last year that dropped to under 13 years, at this years 30P that will drop to 6 years Interesting, thanks. I'm getting the impression that the economics of solar are compelling for those who consume a lot of electricity but not quite so compelling for those who don't. That may seem obvious but it wasn't to me. I had presumed that export made a more significant contribution.
What about solar panel installation and product warranties, reliability, age related efficiency, insurance costs, maintenance costs ? Do any of these things affect the economics significantly?

Not really I only know of one person who has had an issue with the system and that was a warranty replacement.
I have a 4.2kWh system and 4.8kWh battery I have been on a cheap overnight rate (5p) but will be moving to a more expensive one
It splits for me about 210 days of 0 import and 150 days of import. If would be much better if my panels were south facing not east and west.
on an average year I use 2200 kWh of electricity I Import 850 and export 2000
doing maths without standing charge
2200 kWh would cost £550 @ 25P, 850 = £212 ( Actually last year Import cost me just over £60 ) saving £340 export of 2000kWh @ 5p £100 ( last year was over £300 for me )
So real world is my system cost £7500, but last year as an example I was paid £250 so in effect an £800 return on investment.
Battery is great for 2 reasons, It supplies a lot of my usage during the night period, also if the washing machine, dishwasher etc is on during the day and the sun goes behind the clouds it acts as a buffer and stops me importing at high rates.
