Our two-year fixed tariff for gas & electricity finishes this month and, as expected, the new rates offered are one helluva shock. Whereas we've been paying £1,000 pa for the two of us, Octopus is offering their so-called Loyalty fixed tariff for the next 12 months for the bargain price of £3,800. Two weeks ago, they offered us the same tariff for £3,100. 😲 That's how quickly things are moving. The best independent advice seems to be coming from Martin Lewis, MSE, who suggests remaining on the standard (capped) variable tariff for the time being. For us that looks to be nearer £2,500... probably rising to over £3,000 after October's cap increase. Surely government is sooner or later going to have to look into the doubling (or worse) of the daily standing charges, plus any profiteering that's going on? They won't be able to ignore this forever because, as Martin said on TV last week, this is going to crucify some people come the winter. We're reasonably financially insulated from it, but some poor pensioners will be freezing to death this winter. 😢 Is this ALL down to Russia?
Profiteering, geopolitics and war ? What is the point of all this cheap green electricity and independence from oil and gas when electricity price increases are locked with gas price increases ?
Only 33% of UK electricity is produced using gas yet electricity price increases are at least 100% of gas price increases.

The standing charge includes an amount to cover the costs of companies acting as SOLR for ones that went bust so that should drop out ( Who knows when though ).
High Standing charges are a tax on the poor.
If Electricity is 35pkWh and standing charge is 40p per day
frugal pensioner uses 3kWh day cost £1.45 over 48P kWh Average person uses 6 kWh day cost £2.50 41.5pkWh High user uses 20kWh day cost £7.4 37p kWh
I accept that in the summer my electricity import costs me over £1 kWh ! that's because I use so little often less than 15kWh month because I have solar and battery.
In a winter because of the tariff I'm on it will fall to about 20P as I can charge the battery overnight at 7.5PkWh. ( Over the last year my import cost was £68 for 880 kWh ) my export is worth about £400 over the same period.

Has anyone managed to reduce the DD amount for energy suppliers this month? Government help is £66, and yet I couldn't reduce my DD amount with e.on! The recommended DD from e.on is almost 67% increase, and way higher than what I expected to pay with the new prices.
It seems the sensible thing to do is leave it unchanged or to cancel dd

Not sure if all suppliers do the same, that was from EDF and they say within 5 working days.

I actually changed it back to the higher level (since there was still impact of higher prices to come) but then decided that might upset their systems so moved it back down again ! (I'm sure it won't upset their systems, but I'd rather give it at least one payment run, check and then decide on what to set the DD at).

also with E ON NEXT. only yesterday contacted customer services about large increase in DD even with government subsidy for next few months.i asked how they justify this whilst i am nearly £600 in credit now because of their constant reviews of my DD. told them i do not want to cancel DD so they need to adjust this figure to a realistic amount considering my actual usage.CS looked at my account and agreed it was far to much and that even the previous increase was not realistic.the lady was very polite and understanding of my situation and we agreed a much much lower monthly amount and was asked if there was anything else they could help with. is it their computers just throwing out amounts for these DDs. i thanked her for her help and after refreshing computer new amount to be taken each month had already been implemented. 5 stars for CS from me for this call handler.

Meanwhile, BG pays £66 back by DD automatically a few days later even without new billing.

I want to keep the money in the account so I have a buffer over the winter.
