Water

We do of course need to reduce leaks, build more water storage, and provide more connections between areas, however, reducing domestic water usage is simple. 1. Install water meters, it is estimated that this alone reduces usage by 10-20% and only about half of homes have one 2. Educate users on efficient use of water 3. Offer discounted prices on water saving devices 4. Put the price up I think that most water companies do most of that but meter roll out seems to be far too slow. We use a pressure hose (not recently of course) to clean the patio, drive, and cars and have teenagers taking extended showers but still average 130l per head per day so other households must be using much more if the average is over 150l.

On 2: I think there is a quite a lot of that goes based on comms from our water company On 3: Ditto On 4: imagine the uproar and the demand to renationalise (as if that is a solution). On 1: My understanding is that new builds have to be metered, but existing customers it is optional. I had assumed that was by govt dictat. For us, living in a larger house with only 2 of us, getting a meter installed was a no-brainer just on cost grounds.

And unlike just about any normal company, the Water companies can't just put the price up. They have to go through umpteen rounds of consultations with the state owned water regulator first.
Having two ultimate bosses (your board and the regulator) is just nonsense.

I think to get lowers bills on a meter you want the number of people living at the property to be small and/or the house to be big

I'd rather hope so. They are state sanctioned monopolies, and unlike with Telecoms they are not operating in a competitive environment. So they have to be subject to price regulation, and indeed an overall regulatory framework which ensures they invest adequately, can make a 'reasonable' return on capital / asset base, and don't screw over their captive customer base in the process. Given the size of CEO / board salaries in a number of them (relative to size/complexity of the business), and the dividends paid back to their parent companies (since most are subs of other companies), they are not subject to sufficiently tight financial regulation - be that price wise/investment wise/somewhere along that sliding scale.

.... Bricks in the toilet cistern were recommended then too. Edit: We don't have double flush toilets at home, do many people?Yes. In my experience.

Yes to double flush option
Yes to only run clothes wash when we have a full load Yes to showering every month whether I need to or not Dish washer use is a far more complicated discussion. Bosch like to claim a dishwasher uses less water than a domestic human. When pushed on the research they actually compare with a restaurant washer up, who doesn't pay the bills for energy or water. So hand washing is best for the domestic situation.

£102,490,000 fines and 7 prosecutions in 2021 So who really paid the fines? Surely not another to increase our water bills?

I was amazed that 60% of households have water meters fitted. I guess for the other 40% there is no incentive to cut consumption.
Sorry, but given all the problems around the world, I just can't get excited about a hose pipe ban.

We use a pressure hose (not recently of course) to clean the patio, drive, and cars and have teenagers taking extended showers but still average 130l per head per day so other households must be using much more if the average is over 150l. Those with hot tubs/ pools etc might well help push the average up (and I wonder how many of those are on water meters). It sounds like some people might fill and drain a small pool / hot tub multiple times a year.
