One thing that does need to happen is equality. For example we get General waste collected every 3rd Week, in some parts of Wales it's fortnightly or even weekly. We have to sort recycling in Cardiff currently it's co-mingled ( all in 1 bag ) They have run a trial of separation in Cardiff, The Public hated it, the result was more general and less recycleables, but the council report recommended pressing ahead. Means less collection vehicles and with the landfill ban in 2025 most councils should be sorting co mingled waste at an automated recycling facility. The public still need to contribute to recycling as much as possible prior to collecting.

We seem to be stuck in a permanent low growth situation with ever rising taxes to pay for higher government costs. Starmer talks about low wages, but that is all relative to the cost of living which has been massively increased by every chancellor since Gordon Brown, together with the Bank of England, boosting house prices to the present ridiculous level. All very well for those who bought years ago but not for new buyers and renters who pay such a high proportion of their income and the taxpayer paying for housing benefit which is something like £24 billion per year.
In France house prices are lower than in 2005 when I bought there, but am now selling with a lower asking price than it cost then. How can we compete with them?
If we are ever to become competitive again house values need to collapse, but no politician will let that happen so we are condemned to permanent decline.
Have I got this all wrong?

I'd settle for property wealth to be sensibility taxed like other assets are. Perhaps that would allow tax cuts at the bottom end for earned income?

A property tax has been tried in a few nations and backed off pretty quickly. The real money leaves the country and as normal you just tax the dumb shmucks who want to live a simple middle class life.
Smith really did cover this well in his Wealth of Nations. What are the Brits any good at? High end education (top 4 universities only), Pharma and Finance. Pharma just got a kick in the teeth not least Brexit as the Pharma testing organisation for the EU was based in the UK (long gone now) see also Finance was pretty good up until about 15 years ago when we decided to castrate the markets now all discovering that living in the Netherlands and France is a fair bit nicer than the UK. Plus there is far too much hate against Finance. My own MP (when a corbynite) told us that he hated Business and Finance in particular, now that he is a starnmenite he has had an epiphany.
So basically we damage and attack the very businesses that make us the money to pay for our ever expanding health service.
If you want a laugh, go look at how Germany treats small and medium sized manufacturers or France treats top end Universities, Fashion, Hi-end foods and Perfume and discover how the state doesn't need to kill the golden goose but just gives it a nod along.

If you give Brits wealth they just spend it on , far better to take it away from them and let the Gov spend it on similar.

Housing is a major issue and not just in big cities. I can buy a 3-bed terraced house here for under £125,000, and rents are £6-800 a month. Allowing for repairs etc 5-6% a year on an appreciating asset is a good return. When I came here 5 years ago you could get a property in decent condition for £60-70,000 and one that needed work for under £40,000. One of the issues is that many people are in poorly paid jobs or on benefits (or a combination of the 2), so end up stuck renting, then when they retire as many do here with no private or work pension the Government ends up paying housing benefit for life.

Where is "here" Keitha? seem like good price4s for houses? Keith's in the Welsh valleys. They're unheard-of heights for properties there.

wow , really cheap houses. I bought a motorbike (w mounters) and a van (David spear commercials) in wales a few years back , cheapest I could find in UK was wales for some reason. Bloody long drive back to Scotland . Funny my son moved in to a new house recently and was speaking to his neighbour , apparently the same house was £50k in 1990 , son just paid £211k. im sure the wages have not gone up 4 times , although in 1900 I was probably on some governement youth "opportunities" scheme.

This comment is in no small part due to my interest in the fees being charged by BDO iro Col ...... but is also tied to what was not in the Statement. On 1st Nov this year BDO appointed 33 employees to 'Partner' positions, the total number of partners is now 428, the largest it has ever been.BDO is run as an LLP. This gives the business one hell of an advantage over standard Ltd Companies. The Company does not have to pay Employers National Insurance on Partners/Members 'pay'.* In 2021 BDO partners average pay was £760,000. Think of the Employers NI that doesn't find it's way to the Treasury. Add in the 'lost' contibutions from Deloittes, PWC, EY, KPMG, numerous big law Co's, various hedge funds, other funds and the 'loss' to the treasury will be well into the 10's of £m each year. So my gripe with the budget is that it (not unsurprisingly) didn't tackle the glaring legal 'loopholes' that exist for the benefit of a few businesses and that most cannot exploit. *In theory HMRC does have powers in this area but is not keen to use them, they have lost court cases in the past .....
