With so mnay tech savvy contributore on this board I thought I'd ask the following: I have been trying for last hour to transfer some pics from my htc mobile to my new acer laptop to no avail. had tried connecting via 2 different usb ports but laptop not recognising mobile. Tried bluetooth, no issue on mobile, but cannot seem to get laptop to play (when I click on b'tooth icon, it take eternity for options to come up on screen & when I try to click one, it does not respond, none do!) Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've never had this issue with my old laptop where it connected immediately & I need to load the pics on drive to email asap

When you connect on some phones you have to switch the type of connection on the mobile from loading only to media transfer (might be called differently). If it is set to loading only you cannot access the files as it only draws power from the laptop. Best of luck.

Thanks but I'm aware of above & have chosen the option of mounting the phone as an external drive but still the laptop is not recognizing it for some reason!

Never been able to do it the obvious ways (direct conncetion/BT) with my Samsung so I just use a WIFI transfer app on the phone. Allows you to access the phone through an IP address like its a drive and then just download/copy the files over Wifi.

I also had a very stupid moment last year when I spent ages downloading all sorts of stuff and upgrading the computer when I realised I was using the USB power lead which came with a phone and it doesn't transfer data it is power only.
How old is the OS on the laptop? A few years ago many phones (not sure about yours, but includes mine) stopped using the standard mounting as a USB drive which had been common for the previous 10+ years. It is standard in new OS but you have download something for older ones. Should be okay in Ubuntu 14.04 onwards and windows 10, not sure about windows 8.

Standard debug procedure - try another port (you did) try another lead (did you?) try another PC, try another mobile (or equivalent) .. that should highlight where the problem lies. Yes, do watch out for 'power only' USB leads .. evil idea. Also, when plugged in, device manager on the laptop or PC should see =something= attached to the USB port (which was not there before) even if it can't understand how to talk to it. I've not got an HTC .. most of my devices speak googledrive or dropbox or airdroid or whatever.

I have always used "My Phone Explorer" it has worked well with a few HTC phones and various china phones , phablets and tablets.
There is a host program for the pc and an app for the phone, it works over cable, Bluetooth or wifi and syncs contacts, calendar plus photos and files.

Curve ball... thought about a sandisk dual usb drive? Has both mini and normal usb for the exact purpose of file transfer between device and pc (&vice-versa). No programs needed and can use on any device/pc that accepts usb data transfer.

I bought a little (4port) ethernet switch for under an tenner, which is parked on the top of and connected to the big pc, so when I want to propagate a folderful of photos it's very quick. I also have sugarsync and crashplan both cloud and local usb hdd.

Download htc sync manager and turn on usb debugging on the phone. If the problem still exists, then there should be problem with the usb port.
