You don't need any apps, you don't need to spend any money. I'm assuming your HTC phone is an Android based phone: Open the "Drive" app on your phone. It will already be installed. If you've never used the app before there may be some tutorial or something to wizz through. Drive is basically storage that Google gives you for free. Think of it like a USB stick that's "in the cloud". Upload the file(s) you want on your laptop. Once they are uploaded. Go to drive.google.com on your laptop - sign in to your google account (ensure it's the same account you're using on your phone). Select the file(s) and download. Not exactly the most elegant solution. But it'll get you there.

This is excellent and very easy to use. I use it to sync all sorts of things both personally and professionally getsync.com/

I use Windows and I don't have to do anything, it all just works automatically through OneDrive.

I use Windows and I don't have to do anything, it all just works automatically through OneDrive. While this works it's slower. Your PC uploads to OneDrive and then your phone downloads from OneDrive. Resilio Sync misses out the middle man. The transfer is direct from PC to phone. It's sold as "cloud without the cloud". No file size limits. No storage limits. No trusting anyone else with your data. It's an excellent piece of software

It's an excellent piece of software Sounds good, but it is solving problems that I don't have, current speed is fine, works reliably and transparently, plenty of free space, OneDrive acts as an automatic backup, I don't transfer sensitive information, and I don't need yet another app.

I have always used "My Phone Explorer" it has worked well with a few HTC phones and various china phones , phablets and tablets.
There is a host program for the pc and an app for the phone, it works over cable, Bluetooth or wifi and transfer text messages, contacts, calendar plus photos and files.
I've tried 'My phone explorer' and it didn't work for my Samsung s7, i used Samsung Kies to transfer data from my s7 to computer it works but not back up my messages and contacts.
