Morning,
Following on from the 'How old?' & What sex?' thread, I have been looking at our data again and looking at which bank/building society our lenders transact with (or at least use for their MoneyThing transactions).
As another change to win a chocolate bar, I thought I would ask whether someone could correctly state the top 5 banks from the list below by the highest number of MT lenders first?
[One vote per forum member and guesses to be submitted by 12pm Wednesday. If it is too difficult, I might reduce the list in a day or two and allow people a second guess.]
Kind regards,
Ed
List:
Barclays Clydesdale Co-operative Bank First Direct Halifax HSBC Lloyds Nationwide Natwest RBS Santander TSB Yorkshire Bank

[One vote per forum member and guesses to be submitted by 12pm Wednesday. If it is too difficult, I might reduce the list in a day or two and allow people a second guess.] If I got my quick bit of maths right, if all banks are considered equal (no commentary on equal 'what' please), then there are 1287 combinations of top 5 banks from that list. There is a little under 1900 members on the board. So there is probably a reasonable chance one or more people will get it right if everyone has a go.

Maybe a should remove 1 from the list (leaving 792 combinations), or even 2 (leaving 252)? However, since not all banks are equal maybe if I just remove 1 at this stage to limit my chocolate costs this month. Having just watched the excellent film 'The Big Short', perhaps someone would like to 'short' the outcome.

I make it over 100 times more than that so we need more members! I suspect you are calculating perumtations rather than combinations. I was working on the premise Ed was not expecting to have the top 5 in top 5 order....but maybe he was. In which case I really won't be making a guess...

Indeed, I assumed that they should be in order

Oh heck... I was going on the basis of permutations on the original question, but calculated the chance based on combinations (1,287 vs 154,440)!
I think I need to revisit the question. Perhaps either combination (not in order) of 5 out of a list of 12 OR permutations (in order) of 5 out of a list of 6?
Any preference?

Or we could change the whole thing into a game of FFF, and I could respond to each guess with how many of the 5 are correct AND how many are in the right order and start this at say 1pm today. (Like the game Master Mind which I loved playing when I was a child).
