FWIW, and in case anyone else is affected, I have not been getting any of the ABLRATE 'bulk update' (new loans etc) emails for a couple of months. After some problem diagnosis, I now know why - those emails (unlike the 'you have made a deposit' etc) are sent out via something called 'sendgrid', which apparently has this nice 'safety feature to protect the sender's reputation' .. in particular if an email bounces** (once? repeatedly?) future attempts are just quietly dropped without even being tried.
I THINK ABLRATE now understands this, and I have pointed them at the page of how they can edit the 'drop list' and spring me (and maybe others) back into life .. but if you are missing 'bulk distribution' emails, you might want to ding them to see if you are on the 'drop' list too.
** And I did have an email bounce problem with my ISP back in September, or maybe even earlier.

We responded to this issue via mail, but here is the gen so you all know>
The problem was that the ISP in this case bounced the mail back with a 'click this link' to deliver the email. Our system sees that as failed mail and takes it off the list and puts the mail address in suspension (and of course, being automated we would not see a 'click this link') . We can take it out of suspensions but if the underlying issue is not solved (i.e the ISP has changed its process, filters set etc etc), then it will just bounce again and end up in suspension.
We have changed some settings within the system and created a sub domain for emails. So if you whitelist 'updates.ablrate.com' it should help if you are having any issues with receiving mails. I would say that the delivery rate is very high, but we will always have some kind of issues at any one time. Talktalk was the first one, that was solved and then it was virginmail and after that came blueyonder.
The new settings on emails should solve 99.9% of the issue... but if you do get any problems at all, please do let us know.
..and thanks to GSV3MIaC for the feedback
