Didn't know Euro account was free with Barclays, only thing I noticed was they charge £5 for SEPA transfers when continental banks do it for free.

Bank of Ireland allows opening account online without need to visit branch. You need certified copies of passport, 2 Address Id documents to upload online. €20/year account charge.

With @nancelot's agreement I have merged the recent thread created in the General P2P Discussion area with this one so all of this type of information is in one place.

Nearly all banks won't open account for non-residents online (at least if you don't show up in the branch in person). That's why I suggested N26 as one (future) option. They do open accounts for residents of France btw. Well EU law says it has to be possible, eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32014L0092&from=ENIf one doesn't much like N26 who in Germany do you like oh Wise one? I have called and emailed German Financial Ombudsman, as N26 is potentially disregarding the EU directive allowing legal residents in EU to open basic account in EU countries they don't reside in. N26 they still won't support UK customers.

@nancelot This will be entertaining. let me know what he replies. If you succeed in forcing N26 (which I highly douibt), I expect that they will say something like : 'sure you can open an account, just show up in Berlin'. To give credit to N26: they are the ONLY German bank that plans or already lets many EU residents open accounts online. All other German banks do not do this.
To turn this around: How do I open a UK sterling account with a UK bank online (that is without showing up). Do I write to the UK ombudsman, or is there any guide how to do that? And I mean a normal (basic) current account. Not one of this ridiculous high fee expat once.

wiseclerk Well, I like playing with bureaucracy and I have time at the moment to play around Call First Direct(http://firstdirect.com), they may be able to help you with opening an account without showing up at branch, as they don't have any branches (or parent company HSBC at +441226261010 ) And yeah, you can call Ombudsman if UK bank refuses to help you, let me know how that goes. I initially called UK ombudsman and was told that you need to deal with ADR from country where bank is registered.

Well HSBC did not want to open an account for me when I asked some weeks ago. For identification I could go to my local hsbc branch..

I called them, they took my inquiry, put me on hold and then told me that they unfurtonately don't open bank accounts for people living outside the uk, who don't already have a bank account in the UK...
btw: it seemed that the call Center is in india, had difficulties to understand his pronounciation.

Ombudsman reply : "If a credit institution rejects a consumer's application for a basic payment account, he or she can make a complaint to BaFin (form only available in German) or, alternatively, apply for administrative proceedings (again, the form is only available in German). BaFin then decides if the bank must accept the application. Just like the consumer, the bank has the right to lodge an objection and a complaint against BaFin's decision. Alternatively, the consumer can bring an action directly against the institution based on the latter's refusal to open an account or avail themselves of the German Bundesbank's Arbitration Board (Schlichtungsstelle). As long as the arbitration is ongoing, administrative proceedings with BaFin are not possible.
