Just seen it on C4+1 and it was pretty awful tbh! I think the 25 x your spending bloke was the chap who writes this blog. Nice. earlyretirementextreme.com is my preferred FIRE consumption, mainly the forum there - The whole FIRE "scene" is invariably full of INTJ types which doesn't make for a good TV show I'm sure. Suits people like me/us though who are most certainly all spreadsheeted and calculate up to our trajectory to FIRE. ERE forums is a little hardcore for me but he is one of the grandfathers of FIRE. I'm still in denial about INTJ but it's inescapable given the evidence. To achieve the goal you really need to earn it, save it and be prepared to take calculated risks with it - combinations that are surprisingly rare among peers.

Suits people like me/us though who are most certainly all spreadsheeted and calculate up to our trajectory to FIRE. Yep ERE all the way here too, both that site and Mr Money Mustache definitely changed my life entirely. I don't read MMM at all anymore though, it's become far too cultish. If its not already been mentioned, Monevator did a piece on this recently too. monevator.com/fire-financial-freedom/It's easy to be cynical about the whole thing, and (although I didn't see it) I'm sure the documentary made the people seem like loons, but for the right person/people it definitely works. In my view, plan A for normal people is find a job that you love and then have a sensible financial attitude. I'd have loved to be in this category but honestly just couldn't find one and also meanwhile was building at least a respectable salary in my not particularly liked work which increased the opportunity cost throughout. A good plan B, which is the road I took, is to put yourself on the path to Financial Independence as soon as possible. I think Monevator absolutely nailed it with saying that the 'RE/retire' part is a bit pointless. If you're motivated enough to put in the work to make yourself independent aged <40, then why on earth would you want to stare at a wall following that? In the end, or as of now anyway, wife and I saved about 70% ish of what I think we need to be truly financially independent. I decided I would rather top myself than continue at Corpo-Giant limited for a year longer, and so we sold up, opened an awful lot of those high-interest bank accounts, and left. That was coming up to 2 years ago now, and we've been living here there and everywhere since then. Wife found some freelance online work, I found, well this forum TBH, and now we're both about as occupied as we want to be. Point being, if you're well advanced on the journey to FI, then definitely don't bother making yourself miserable by finishing it. The chances of you not finding some other income if you have time and put your mind to it are naught. Plus you'll probably save plenty more than you think in your new office-free life anyway :-) Edit: Another definite INTJ here in the ranks btw - two main things I couldn't stand in my old job: 1) Incompetent people and 2) (by far the worst) Finishing my actual work by 10.30am and then having to effectively 'potter' around until the end of the day. Unbearable! Edit 2: For perspective purposes, I was in my early 30's when I left work, and I certainly didn't work in the world of high finance or any remotely ridiculous paying job. So, it can be done, would have been fully FI by 36/37 if I could have tolerated it. Full disclosure: No kids, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes - King of the Road!

Sooo... time for an update maybe. I think I'm now on Plan C. I had absolutely got to the stage where I was totally happy that I COULD just quit...and then almost as soon as I did I realised I didn't really want to just yet, for lots of reasons. Partly because although I had some really great potential plans for next year I wasn't really sure beyond that, partly cos I would really miss the interactions with the guys I work with and am not entirely sure yet how I will ever replace that, partly that I still have more than a little niggling doubt as to what Brexit might do to my overall position and partly because dammit perhaps I need/deserve(?) at least a year or so about not even needing to THINK about whether I can justify a few outrageous splurges before I go all sensible for the rest of my life. But hey, woman - I'm allowed to change my mind, right?! Of course as soon as I came to this conclusion the workload went totally nuts!! But actually I far prefer working when there's too much to do rather than not enough, so that was fine. Anyway, in the meantime I have a cunning plan for increasing the life in my work/life balance which should hopefully work well, tho will be a little while before I know it's going to work. And worst case scenario I can always quit at a later date instead! But for now, a bit of a delay to retirement, and after all I am only just 45

Congratulations on being in a position where you can choose pom. From what I’ve read that is a great feeling, so enjoy. Ive concluded I’m further away than ever myself so will be in the rat race for quite a while longer. Thinks like brexit and the inevitable markets crash (along with certain numbers being just too small) have convinced me that I need to go to work a little more. But seriously, well done on getting to where you have. Most people don’t make it there, so please savour the moment. And enjoy 2018!

Oh I dunno, in some ways its a lot easier when you don't have choices (yeah I know, poor little me) Yeah it's the inevitable markets crash that scares me too, so sod it, I'll go for a little bit longer of not really needing to budget while the salary is still around and strengthening my position again while I can. And I got nervous at potentially having to rely on p2p returns to live off when the growth in problem loans is slightly messing up cashflows (because I don't want to touch the other sutff yet) .Tho if the world economy still doesn't all go to sh*t in 2018 I may really need to make some active decisions Happy New Year everybody
