The liability to defend such legal action rests soley on the shoulders of the person making the statement that maligns the individual or legal entity concerned. In which case what is the reason for having a 2 tier platform? Can I refer you back to the earlier thread that discussed the rationale for considering the creation of DD Central, the results of the focus group votes (after discussion of the legal liability implications), and the existence of a "separate private forum".

I don't think you can because I think it's gone, and in any case I thought the topic deserved passing in front of a new wider panel

In which case what is the reason for having a 2 tier platform? Although the liability might still rest upon the poster, I believe that it would have a major impact upon any damages. A libellous post which can be seen by anyone with access to the internet could cause much greater damage to the complainant and thus any financial recompense, than a post which could be seen only by closed group of a few hundred individuals (all of whom it could be claimed would be financially literate and less likely to be influenced by an erroneous post).

Plus the open part of the forum can be (and is) regularly trawled and indexed by the Google (and other) crawler bots .. hence a (Google) search for 'XYZ address / company / etc.' is quite likely to spit out links to the forum, potentially putting any libel in front of the odd Billion or so readers (China need not apply). Closed areas are not subject to this level of data collection and archival.

Apologies for diverging from the topic of the announcement and returning to the pros & cons for a closed group. It is possible to bar access to crawlers such as Google & Bing using the "robots.txt" facility. For the crawlers who don't respect the contents of robots.txt, it should be possible to bar access based upon IP address. But all that depends upon having access to such administrative facilities - all academic if the P2PIF administrators don't have such access.

Unfortunately forum staff do not have access to robots.txt, it is controlled by proboards at a higher level - the forum is in effect a sub-domain off proboards.

Access to DD Central is available to every forum member who has a historic post count of at least 50, Wouldn't it be better if it was [some number of] likes, perhaps 25?

I would have thought that but you can give yourself a thumbs up as illustrated. (I never do this of course, but just to prove a point.)

I'm not trying to be a spoilsport here, but before people get too trigger happy creating pointless posts across the forum just to get their post count up, please realise forum staff have the option to reduce individual's post count as we delete posts.
Pointless posts that get reported (via the Report Post option under the cog wheel menu) are liable to be deleted by forum staff, and the post count reduced accordingly.

Many of the 'post accumulators' have been members for some time. Maybe a registered time offset against the required post count would be fair.
