Just had my first defaulted loan, $17.70 repaid so $7.30 written off, "..for helping get clean drinking water to families in need in Laos." I am happy that the full $25 helped fund the water project so have no issue with the rest being defaulted.
I treat all my Kiva loans & "invested money" as charity donations, so whilst I recycle repayments to fund more loans I do not expect any money to be returned to me personally, so it doesn't hurt like some normal P2P defaults might. Just noting the event here for interest & to give a full & open account of how the whole experience works. For the record I have so far achieved 54 loans totalling $1350 so $7.30 is only ½% of my overall Kiva impact.
If you are not yet involved please do take a couple of minutes to read up about this very beneficial P2P charitable scheme, as I think you will find it worthy of your support. P2P Forum members have collectively funded $12000 across 456 loans.

Yep - I have a few 'delinquent' loans but, in the great scheme of things, the total amount is negligible compared to the way my Pensions and ISAs go up and down.
I feel it is better to give micro businesses a chance to manage their own finances than simply to give an anonymous lump sum to charities. (That said, Sight Savers and Water Aid will always get my vote.)
