Just an FYI in case anybody else sees this.
I messed up entering my AC password today when logging in. As expected the login failed. Didn't know this would happen, but got an email from AC saying there had been an invalid attempt to log into my account. Good idea imo. However, the email said the attempt came from Norwich. As I'm nowhere near Norwich, I contacted AC via Livechat. Seemed unlikely somebody would be trying to hack my account from Norwich just as I was messing up entering my password, but thought it best to check.
AC's response:
"Its the email that's wrong, For some reason the IP location detector is a little (off) with it's geography. I would just ignore it now but if you get this email when you're not trying to log in, let us know. "

Could be that it is picking up the location via your ISP. For instance If I use mylocation.org/ it tells me I am in Warwick which is 150 miles away.

Geolocation of IP addresses is mostly bunkem and although it MAY result in a reasonable guess, it isn't sensible to rely on it for anything other than the country. My domestic ISP is Plusnet (a company based in Yorkshire) so geolocation on my IP address suggests I'm surrounded by dales and whippets when in fact dreaming spires would be closer to the mark.
Apologies to readers in Yorkshire for gross stereotyping.

The location I get from these messages is nowhere near where I live. TBH, this data is so unreliable that I think they'd be better off not using it at all.
Personally I could do without them being quite so quick off the mark: while I'm all for security, if I mistype the password and then get it right 10 seconds later, surely they could refrain from pinging me?

Apologies to readers in Yorkshire for gross stereotyping. FTFY. e.g. when my UK mobile phone is roaming in Europe, geolocation shows its IP address as still being in the UK. (I assume that when data roaming, all the traffic is routed via a tunnel to the home network, so when it emerges from that tunnel in the UK, that's where the rest of the internet thinks I am).

Be careful assuming that the location data is based purely off your IP address. As stated, that can be very imprecise - and there are also many sources of data that can do that with varying degrees of accuracy. However, several paid-for services can provide much more accurate locations that come from more than just that one source (your IP).
Many people have mobile phones with GPS that also connect to WiFi, which means there are good quality databases of WiFi GPS coordinates. There are other sources of location information too, buying and selling this stuff is not a small market.

But those computer whizzes on NCIS, CSI etc can pinpoint the location of somebody within yards by using the IP address....now you've gone and spoilt it as I totally believed it... (BTW I'm also with Plusnet and it thinks I'm in Cornwall rather than Hampshire)

Not that I'm recommending it, of course

I, too, am with Plusnet. It thinks I am in Poplar, whislt I am actually in Cheshire.
Wonder if it's anything to do with those popups which ask if you want the website to know your location.
Is anybody getting their right location?

Location by IP on mylocation.org/ is out by 30 odd miles, but Browser Geolocation (<site> wants to know your location...) is accurate for me.

It may not be your actual location. I received a message to say I was in Holland when I was actually in the East Midlands. However I was using my work tablet which routes through a server in Holland........
