A huge number perhaps, but how much of an increase is unclear. medium.com/wintoncentre/how-much-normal-risk-does-covid-represent-4539118e1196"Every year around 600,000 people die in the UK... if COVID deaths can be kept in the order of say 20,000 by stringent suppression measures, as is now being suggested, there may end up being a minimal impact on overall mortality for 2020 (although background mortality could increase due to pressures on the health services and the side-effects of isolation). Although, as we are seeing, at vast cost." Perversely, if there aren't a sizeable number of deaths due to the virus (and I'm not sure how big a number that would have to be), I could see people afterwards asking "did we put up with all those restrictions, loss of jobs, companies going bust, national debt rocketing, just for that!?" As much as people don't want to admit it, there is always a trade off between the economy and deaths. That's not being heartless, its just a fact of life. In 2015 I think there were around 28,000 seasonal flu deaths, it doesn't lead to everyone being told to stay in the following winter to cut the death rate. Every year there are around 2,000 deaths on the roads, it doesn't mean we should ban motor vehicles. After the Hatfield train crash in 2000, huge restrictions, shutdowns occurred across the rail network that lead to the number of road deaths increasing by 200 - did anyone seriously think 200 people would have died on the railway if the repairs had been done more gradually over time?

Well, this is off topic (so blat me for it if needs be) but depending what assumptions you make, there may be no loss of healthy life years. Broadly speaking, the argument goes like this - the average age of death from COVID-19 is about 78 - in the majority it's hitting those that have serious health conditions and (sorry to be blunt) may not have had long to live anyway. On the other hand, we are pumping far less greenhouse gasses out (which would have killed lots in the long term unless we found some way to make the drastic changes need) and air polutiton is already a huge killer and that's gone way down, never mind road accidents and lots of other things. EDIT: In hindsight my post above is a very first world way of looking at things. Difficult to know what will happen to the planet and its people if we now significantly reduce greenhouse gases.
What we do know is
There is evidence that the earth's temperature will rise as aircraft Con Trails in upper atmosphere contribute to cloud cover during the day reflecting solar energy that would otherwise have reached the earth’s surface. This was found after the flying ban of 9/11 and born out by Pan evaporation rates. This also leads to increased risk of skin cancer.
The increase in C02 is increasing the worlds food production.
GDP will reduce and there is less money for the NHS, care of the elderly, disabled ect. and even P2P.
I am not saying that reducing C02, pollution is overall not a good thing but there are could be other consequences especial if this happen too quickly.

No point mentioning any lower discounts Some people are really going for it, was there something like -50% offers recently? I won't buy any of these, nor sell at such discounts - I'd rather stay where I am and hope for the best.

More than happy to post the full list (444 loans out of 595 ow discounted) Interestingly, the total amount discounted has been falling (by around £450k now) over the past 2-3 days. Don't know if that is people buying or discounts being delisted but its falling all the same.

Don't know if that is people buying or discounts being delisted but its falling all the same. about 7% of that drop is my sales!

I said to myself if any of the deep discounted loans (10%+) are ones that I hold already (and I'm not already selling myself) then maybe buy - Result is not one passed the test.

I am much more optimistic on all of this. I think we will be coming out of it much sooner than people now fear.
Testing is nowhere near large scale rough. I think when capacity dramatically ramps up and we also get the antigen test that will be what breaks the back of this.
My feeling is that the umber of people that have had this is significantly higher than the median estimates. I have read a few reports saying that up to 20 million people may have had it or have it in the UK. Seems too high but still, the cases in London must be astronomical. Just look at the underground, people were cramming on for weeks while the virus was out there. It's just impossible to contain something like this in this environment.
If the above is true then the mortality rate is way lower than the current estimates. It also means many people are now immune and a proper debate can happen on the risks of this disease v the economic damage it is doing. More ventilators are being built, health capacity is increasing so in a few weeks the NHS can deal with a significant number of people. We can't put the whole world on hold to save 10-20k people that were a few months from death anyway. I think we will be out of this way sooner than I was thinking a week ago.

Are you saying that you de-listed them or sold that 7%?

It is almost certainly less than 1% mortality overall, and orders of magnitude more prevalent than the (extremely limited) testing has shown. Iceland has confirmed what the Diamond Princess told us - 50% are totally asymptomatic. The real health issue is not excess COVID-19 deaths, it is the temporary crippling of the NHS, which is happening. The economic, social and psychological effects are however irreversible now we are in lockdown IMHO, and we will have a long depression. I am not optimistic about that.

Are you saying that you de-listed them or sold that 7%? Sold about £31K, mostly at smallish (0.5-1.5%) discounts, some at high (though still single figure) discounts, a few at no discount at all. I have taken an overall hit to my XIRR of -0.45% (I sold about 40% of my total holding)

Sky news interviewed the boss of Gtech a few days ago. They have made a prototype ventilator and could be making a thousand a day within a week or two (if the design is approved). It obviously doesn't have all the whistles and bells of the normal units, but it does what it says on the tin (so to speak)
