I really think the west should try to support the people of hk in some indirect manner. It might be more productive in the long term than these new trump tariffs.

Yes but the whole point of a military is to protect its citizens and country. Not attack its citizens. And if anyone who protests against 'change' is attacked by a brainwashed military then in my opinion that military and the government that controls it is evil.

PRC is very sensitive to ideas crossing the border. I imagine they are not wholly confident in the great firewall and I assume there is some movement of people. AIUI this was triggered by proposed extradition arrangements. I could believe that PRC were more concerned with people fleeing China rather than what was happening in HK, but they are not inclined to back down in principle.

Hongkong hasn't had most of the UK measures, mostly just a bit of a travel ban. In cafes and restaurants and stuff they did say tables couldn't be too close together - but nothing like the severity of closing them all down!
