They sure have! Talk about a confused lot! Cannot even distinguish between ex terra and extra terrestrials. Whatever happened to education? Now here's something which is true and very recent: my granddaughter had a French project to do over half term while she was staying with us. The "project" involved 15 questions or tasks. Here are a sample:
Name the capital of France. Most eight year olds would know this, whether they studied French or not.
Who is the Prime Minister of France? An ephemeral fact of no value. Prime Ministers in France change more frequently than football managers in England.
Name the goalkeepers of Auxerre, Marseille & Paris St Germain. More ephemera and not even culturally important.
Name 3 other French sports stars and their sports. A TV trivia quiz question
Name 5 famous French speaking people who are not sports stars. Ditto
What is the difference between vin blanc and vin rouge? The only French words in the entire "project" and these are the most basic that one would have learned early in the first year!
Download pictures of 3 different makes of French car. !!
Find out 5 facts about any famous French speaking singer. More trivia
There was nothing in it which could be of conceivable value in later life. As education, it was worse than worseless as it consumed time where something useful could have been learnt.
And the level of the student that was given this project? Second year grammar school.
I will spare the blushes of the school by not naming it (for the moment). I await their response to my letter on this subject. God help the country if this sort of thing goes on in other subjects and in other schools.
[Well it does say this thread is for discussing anything]

Maybe it was mistitled and should have been "How to use Google".

My thought was that it demonstrated what today's average French teacher thought was a really tough set of questions... or maybe that IS the new GCSE syllabus and we're all old fogies, n'est pas?. 8>.

Actually it’s preparing kids for an A level and a degree in how to be a celeb, or if you fail that, a nail technician or mobile phone salesperson.

.... or a banker-[MOD Edit: reason: language]. MOD - What a pity, especially when I used to have one in the family (thankfully exited via a divorce) and so KNEW my description was accurate. I suppose if I had used tinky-winky that would have been OK (but inaccurate)?

I wouldn't give a - xxxx (four x) for the bankers in the light of their latest misdemeanours.
