Most interesting post on the thread IMO. I've re-read that and it does sound like I'm saying the other threads are uninteresting which is 100% not what I meant - I've enjoyed reading this thread quite a lot. I just thought it enriched the discussion even more having someone living in china contributing to it.

Not a problem. I did the same thing two days ago when I posted what I thought was a useful new link to an article on methods of calculating mortality rates and the weaknesses of each method, only to have bernythedolt remind me (with good grace) that he'd originally posted it two days before me.

Interesting (to me at least) that deaths/(deaths+recoveries) is still around the 19% mark.

What is interesting about that is that it could be viewed as pulling the two earlier threads together. Namely, ACE2 expression IS higher in Asians, males, and older, BUT those are indirect indicators, and are consequences of the underlying risk factor: i.e. come about because smoking rates are higher in Asians, male Asians are more numerous and heavier smokers than females, and if you are an old heavy smoker then your lungs are particularly shot.

I know it's not a laughing matter, but the data modelling gets even trickier when the Chinese are now bringing people back from the dead... "The National Health Commission of China, in its February 14 official report, deducted 108 previously reported deaths and 1,043 previously reported cases from the total in Hubei Province due to "repeated statistics."

Interesting (to me at least) that deaths/(deaths+recoveries) is still around the 19% mark. Absolutely. I was trying to press that point some while back, but others (including WHO) still seem intent on <2%. It's a bigger killer - at least in China - than being acknowledged. (BTW the latest figures give 16% rather than 19%). Outside China, it's very much lower. Also interesting: of those cases still active, 19% are rated serious or critical. Which seems to fit the pattern above.

Don't just look at the stats. Let's have a closer look what really happening in China. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQa3uuQwOFMAccording to CGTN, 1,716 Chinese medical workers infected, 6 died as of Feb.11. It's up to those medical personnel to do whatever they can treating patients. (Death rate of Chinese medical staffs: 0.34%) China is sending more staffs there to the critical region in Hubei. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9ylcPESX6w Patients inside the makeshift hospital www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDrCrgC5VXwNothing seem to be so bad from these clips. Only god knows how this virus spreading so quickly. History tells us the Hong Kong Flu caused more death in the US than what this Covid 19 virus does right now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_flu_pandemicThe encouraging sign is containment in the rest of the world outside China. At least 5 countries have all patients recovered from the infection. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Crikey, you've been busy! Remember that 0.34% death rate will only be valid if the other 1710 all recover. That's the official measurement used.

I don't expect it to stay @ 0.34%, but it will be another benchmark for the rest of the world, assuming Chinese medical staffs have better hygiene practice than the patients they are treating.

Well, I just received a text message from my GP practice telling me not to go there if I had flu like symptoms and had recently visited SE Asia.
Sensible, if... stark.
