... I understand not everyone feels this way, but what better time to reconsider the claims of Jesus and the wonderful assurance Christians have in him. I'm reconsidering his claim of his Father's omnipotence and his unbounded love of his subjects. Perhaps one or other of the world's deities might consider snuffing out Covid-19 this week, or at least expedite a miracle cure. I can't imagine a better opportunity to rekindle the adulation of the flock. An excellent (implied) question! Not wishing to upset anyone, but no loving father could stand by and allow such a disgusting disease to afflict his children. Anyone selling their 'God of love' to me is on a loser. But since most religions prey on fear, this should be a rich time for recruitment, for all denominations. Best wishes to you.  |

Not wishing to upset anyone, but no loving father could stand by and allow such a disgusting disease to afflict his children. Anyone selling their 'God of love' to me is on a loser. But since most religions prey on fear, this should be a rich time for recruitment, for all denominations. Best wishes to you. :) Tune in at 7pm tomorrow and ask your question! I wish I’d been indoctrinated into religion. It would be nice to believe in something so fantastical at a time like this, kind of like kids believing in Santa You have to consider how it's changing our behaviour, having to consider the elderly, those with disabilities and providing a less polluted environment. It seems to be testing our so called Christian values.

It would be nice to believe in something so fantastical at a time like this, kind of like kids believing in Santa You have to consider how it's changing our behaviour, having to consider the elderly, those with disabilities and providing a less polluted environment. It seems to be testing our so called Christian values.
The current situation is encouraging/enabling/forcing (some) people to have morality, decency and respect ("[insert religion] values"), but without it having to be in a religious context. This is good. I've always thought that providing moral direction was what religion was useful for -- and wished they just left it at that, without having all the fairy tale bits.

This seems to be the one of the first diseases that the religious will struggle to say it was sent by God as punishment for our sins. It seems to have evolved to be particularly well suited to targetting those of a religious disposition, be that in the form of South Korean sects, insistence on keeping islamic shrines open as "places of healing", zealots licking religious places so as to "swallow the virus and make it safe", those holding gatherings to ensure "mass immunization", or pastors bringing together > 1000 people in churches in LA (of course ist entirely co-incidental that they might be filling their coffers at the same time).

I have confidence that there is, or maybe, may not be or is not a God. I have complete confidence that there are nice, helpful people I do however, doubt the existence of the Church as being any sort of connection between one and the other. As Terry Pratchett said, "all will be well if you have a potato when you die" Still "there ain't no atheists in a fox hole"
Should Churches be stalking people in fox holes?

Hopefully it may target a few religious suicide bombers and other terrorists and save a few lives. There a gain a few lives may be saved indirectly from less pollution.

I think it comes down to deciding which religion allows freedom of choice, guidance on how to live a healthy life in a civilised democratic society. Apparently, there’s a lot of common sense written in the New Testament (but its mainly about consideration for others i.e. the L word). It even relates to the turning over of tables of the money lenders - perhaps they were charging extortionate rates of interest! I would think all of the Christian churches in this country have followed the law of the land and common sense and closed their doors, until it’s safe to open them again.

I usually shy away from these discussions about religion, it can bring a lot of comfort to many people. However if you are open minded I would recommend the book Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari in which he talks about how we use myths, stories to help bring complete strangers together to cooperate on a large scale. Religions being an early example of how to bring such large groups together and build Stonehenge, the pyramids and York minster. The most popular story is money Harari points out that Osama Bin-Laden hated America's religion, culture, but not the dollar in fact he was rather fond of it. Today religions are slowly losing there appeal but money is popular with all of us but like our religions it's just a story one we all love to hear for the moment.
