Point taken, but I'm not sure that I'd interpret "the UK's largest P2P platform" (as on RS's home screen) in that way if I was new to the P2P world. Is "the largest parcel delivery company" the one who has, over time delivered the most parcels in total, or the one who has delivered the most parcels within the last week? (or indeed the one who has the capacity to deliver the most parcels during the next week [or other time period of interest]?)

It's Santa Claus. My niece assures me he doesn't exist - don't know where she got that daft notion from.

There could be other metrics such as staff, profit, turnover etc.
The metric I prefer is capital outstanding as this is the money actually on loan.

Alternative suggestion (of use for many metrics) if £-years outstanding .. i.e. multiply (average, expected) capital on loan by time it is (expected to be) loaned out for. This gives proper lenders (mortgage companies etc) a leg up vs payday lenders, and is more useful when looking at ROI or Default rates (IMO .. YMMV). Our wide boy friends in the city may have the odd trillion quid out on loan for a couple of milli-seconds, but if they have to find it for 5 years, it's a different animal.

Some end of year 2014 statistics: > RateSetter matched £293m in loans, making them the largest weekly, monthly and now annual P2P lender. > The Provision Fund has £10.3m to protect it's lenders. > 97% of lender money is 'P' rather than 'I'. Although personally (maybe it's the British in me) has always preferred the underdog. Perhaps time for a new challenge! Kevin.

Does size really matter? It doesn't take a genius to lend a shed load of other people's money, it takes a genius to lend it and get it back.

I agree with your second point, but I do think that size matters. If you are lending money for five years (or longer in some cases) you need to believe that your platform will survive that long. So it needs to make a profit now, or seem likely to within a few years. And in most cases profit is going to be related to size. But we need to watch out, there is a risk, as you point out, that some go for growth to achieve the Lending Club type valuation which might end in tears.

Aiui, half of FC's was institutions lending, how about the others?? Less than 3% of RateSetter lending is by large "institutions", which includes the British Business Bank and a well publicised publicly traded fund manager (with a very appropriate stock exchange ticker symbol.. ) @ westonkevRS
