The NHSX contact tracing app is being trialled in the Isle of Wight, with UK roll-out expected soon. I'm curious to know how many people will download it and whether they'll use it all/most of/some of the time. By 'most of'/'some of' the time, I'm not suggesting people will continually remove/re-install the app, but wonder whether there will be occasions when they deliberately leave their phone at home or turn it off when going out (why would people do that? you tell me).

Nice one, I was thinking of posting something similar. And... I don't know yet. I have yet to see any commentary from the government about why they took a more centralised approach that convinces me.

Agreed. I was reading that - for some reason - the UK was unhappy with the Apple/Android "let's keep the data only on the phones" and went instead for "let's have the data on a centralized server". Makes me immediately suspicious given the former sounds as though it would be better for privacy. I have very little trust in the government on this.

I don't have a phone so can't. If we are offered the wristbands I'd be happy to wear one. My data wouldn't be very interesting.

As an alternative to endless lockdown? Of course, and apps can be deleted when no longer necessary.

If this system works it will tell YOU when you might have been in close encounter.
Get a second phone for the criminal activities.. if that bothers you
Or is it the idea of the government sniffing at your socks? Sneakily
The people have voted for this government

I don't see any real issues with using the app, and (as stated above) I can always leave the phone at home if I am undertaking any nefarious activity.
How about anyone who doesn't use the app goes to the end of the treatment queue if they contract the virus?

Not sure that would be humane

Mmm; so suddenly the chief risk factors of Covid 19 are no longer age/ underlying conditions, but rather owning a "dumb" phone or none at all. Really!!!!

Sneakily The people have voted for this government I have this strange feeling that if the Government (and probably a lot of other people) were really that interested in what I was 'up to' they could find out one way or another. Amazon certainly seem to know more about me than I do, always offering me things I had no idea I needed. So yes happy to install it, obviously if there is some way I can get them to give me a new phone as part of the deal I could feign reluctance. Truth is we have no secrets, and anybody who thinks they do is misguided.

Clearly, one possibly significant limitation is that given that it is likely that the virus can live on surfaces for a number of hours, proximity to a bluetooth enabled spreader is not the only opportunity to be infected by them as they may have shed and left some time before you encounter the contamination.

There is a Berlin artist who used to cause fake gridlock there using a kids trolley and 95 phones. So don't get paranoid just do something useful like everyone else and get a smart phone and download the app.
If it will stimulate the economy and let me go abroad soon, oh yes.
Interesting to choose the Isle. A place famously backward looking, do any of them own a phone?

This was questioned in yesterday's Downing Street Q&A and I thought I heard the answer that the data will be anonymised and only stored on your phone. It's only when someone reports positive that their data is uploaded in order to discover who they've been in contact with, at which point those people will receive a notification with advice. It sounded like the data held centrally is minimal.
