If the purpose of this thread is to suggest the scratch cards and lotteries are by & large a ticket to the poorhouse, I suspect on this forum you may be preaching to the converted!
Remember when the Camelot shine wore off and they introduced more numbers to the Lotto? They hoped to attract back the losers punters with the strapline, "Now even more numbers to choose from", as if that was in some way beneficial to the mugs!
That strapline was a work of genius and I trust the marketing guru behind it received a bonus.

When the national lottery first began our office started a syndicate of 90 staff plus 4 managers and a senior manager. Initially £95 for 95 tickets per week then doubling when the Wednesday draw began. Over a three year period (Nov 94 to Dec 97) we spent nearly £20,000 on tickets and won about £350. That was when there were 49 balls and the odds were much better. We decided to stop doing the lottery and instead save our cash (back down to £1 per week) for our Xmas parties. Each year we had three with a third of us attending each one and the rest of us covering their work when they failed to return to work the following day. Our managers did not deduct a days holiday or add a day to our sick leave for this. It was our headache day that wasn't registered anywhere. Good times. If we had won the jackpot and split it 95 ways there wouldn't be enough to retire on so there was no danger of 95 letters of resignation appearing one monday morning.
