...and this is probably a good point to mention Hive. www.hive.co.uk/Books, DVDs, CDs, eBooks sold online at Amazon-esque prices, but every single sale supporting your local independent bookshop - and you pick which. You can either have them delivered to that shop, or to your home. And all by a company that pays corptax in the UK... www.hive.co.uk/WhatsHiveallabout

A lot of small businesses also use ebay, usually worth a look if you are shopping around.

www.aib.gov.uk/services/essential-itemsConclusions: Medicines over the counter, Cigarettes, Drinks (ANY), Clothes, masks, face-coverings, flowers and plants, stamps, books, magazines, pets, cars, mobile phones, game consoles, tablets, contraception items are not essentials. Well not for the purposes of insolvency, obviously. I'm not sure of your point. So Interesting that florists "up by ear" are still open, pharmacies open and selling OTC Medications. Greggs is open so the chavs are happy. And in Cardiff on Sunday a Church Service was broken up by the Police, Surely a little common sense in that one where everyone was social distancing, All it needed was a quiet word with the Vicar or whoever at the end and get an agreement not to do it again, instead a lot of 80 year plus parishioners have been scared by the Police.

There's a bit more to that one... It's not exactly your bog-standard Church of Wales. It's a bunch of fringe clappy fruitloops trying to make some kind of "persecution" point. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/wales-coronavirus-firebreak-lockdown-rules-police-church-illegal-service-b1370645.htmlThe Rev McLennon is some kind of US "charismatic evangelist". www.wademclennan.com/...and what's that banner say in one of the pics? Riiiight. No point being made there, of course not.

The singing bit is of course a very good point. Its pretty much established fact that singing* and shouting very significantly increase transmission rates. So being inside a happy clappy evangelical or whatever church environment in enclosed space is prime suspect to end up being a superspreader event, whether socially distanced or not.
Religious events have had an uncanny knack of being the source of all sorts of outbreaks. Still, at least it gives them lots of people to offer up their hopes and prayers for I guess.
*though obviously not the church mouse stare at your shoes fingers crossed behind the back type singing that I might do on the rare occassion I've been dragged into a religious place.

At one point early in the pandemic, one church in South Korea was linked to 5,000 cases, over a third of the country's entire cases. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-53620633

The only shopping I have done on line in the past is my weekly supermarket shop which was delivered. Thank you so much for your advice to shop on line at Amazon or Ebay for goods I wanted but didn't urgently need. I have sent for a new phone, sourced from China, which is predicted to arrive in 14 - 21 days. Sorry there will be little or no benefit to the UK tax base - but it was really cheap, just a tad over £100 whereas the same phone from a UK company was 10% more. I've also spent about £250 buying things like hairbrushes, a dehumidifier, pens and paper, plastic kitchen containers etc. Alas none were from a UK based company because the same goods were cheaper from non UK suppliers. Yes I know that the delivery date is longer than for UK companies but that is perfectly acceptable. Everything seems to be made or come from China but their prices are so much cheaper than from the shops in the UK. It's a very real money saver using Amazon and I doubt I will need to make the effort to visit shops in the UK other than for food and clothes again so thank you for opening my eyes to this money saver.

In which case you may not realise that all the big high street retailers you might use are also online, Marks and Spencer, John Lewis, Argos, Currys, B&Q to name but a few. You can also sometimes get things gift wrapped and add a message for presents to be directly delivered for Christmas and Birthdays. Greeting cards from Hallmark, Moonpig and lots of others are also useful.

We bought a Nokia phone from TobyDeals a couple of years ago - supplied from Hong Kong. The charging port failed. Nokia refused warranty coverage, and the supplier warranty was only 12mo instead of 24mo - and would have required it sending back to HK. The cost of paying for the repair closed the purchase saving right up. Of course, your phone should also be stopped at customs, and arrive with a bill for VAT, import duty and the courier handling charge.

Obviously the current situation has significantly accelerated the move to online. But let us not underestimate how unstoppable and large that trend already was. Before this all hit, I did all my food shopping in the 'real world'. But the majority of pretty much everything else I did online. Clothes: nearly all done online, with only the occassional foray to a shop. DIY stuff: yes mostly done in bricks and mortar, but often done on click & collect basis. That has been the case for me and I'm sure many others for a very long time.

So I went to get my eyes tested on Friday, Absolutely shocked !
Wilkos had Christmas and Halloween items covered over, but Poundland had a full range of tat on sale. The Original Factory shop which is Clothes and Homewares fully open Tesco have Homewares, Other electricals and Clothes and shoes unavailable
So if shops don't know the rules how are we expected to.
Another interesting one was social clubs staying open the regulation said licensed premises, apparently most Social clubs don't have a premises licence they have a premises certificate, so some gamed the rules until the loophole was closed.
