trying to keep just £1 in a loan, so as to be able to follow any updates So lets say I have £1000. I offer to sell £999 But the next thing I know somehow I have say 900 left but I am trying to sell 901 ie if it sells I won't have my £1 left.
Any ideas how why, and is there a way?

How if you sell £998 instead? That would guarantee >= £1 left. Or is that too untidy?

Are you offering at a discount then?

Sell it in stages. Sell 500, see what you have left. Sell another 400, see what you have left, and so on.
I've noticed a similar thing when buying, trying to hit an exact round number and it often overshoots.

The point was to keep enough in the loan to be able to see updates etc

If you manage to reduce your holding of a loan to exactly one pound. After the next principal payment you might well be a few pence short of a quid.
