If I was being particularly pedantic, I'd say that was incorrect. As it is not light that originated from earth, it can't be "reflecting back towards us", as it didn't come from here in the first place. The original statement is perfectly correct: it takes x period of time for light to travel from Mars to Earth: its origin, whatever that is for any particular photon in question, is not material to that fact. You have 'overpedantid'. its simple mirror theory. As in if you look in a mirror standing next to (or slightly in front in this scenario) somebody, you see their reflection. Their image is reflected back towards you.Edit, Guy with big torch is still possible though. I overpdendant your overpenaditry. Their image is not reflacted back to you, since their image did not originate from you. Their image did not start from you, hit the mirror, and reflect back. Plus the analogy is nonetheless not a good one: the planet Mars is not a mirror in which you are seeing an image of thesun (which I suggest is the nearest analogy to your proposition). more accurately, you are seeing light from the sun reflected from the planet to you, from which you are able to deduce an image of the planet. But not the same as light reflected back to you (you are not the original source, so it is not travelling back (wards) to you). Remind me: what were we discussing ?

I believe my pedancy stands. the keep word was towards as opposed to back too. Indeed the light does not travel at all (only ever onwards) we merely view a stationary image that alters with the image projected. No idea, but an innocent passer by might mistake it for clever.

I guess we are lucky this went before covid got bad here, don't want to export it to mars and given it to the diminutive green persons. They might see it as a declaration of war.
Why do they call the landers Rovers, as I remember the UK Rover cars had in the later years a pretty poor reputation.

Why do they call the landers Rovers...? Because they rove around the surface of the planet... Same reason the name was originally given to the Rover safety bicycle, the first "modern" bicycle.

They were pretty careful to decontaminate the rover otherwise they might find life on Mars but we could have taken it there. Don't think it would be a bloke with a torch though.
