Very interested in the sentences for the oil protestors today. Once capitalism hit its stride, it became powered by burning. GDP increases mirror increases in fossil fuel consumption. Capitalism is everywhere triumphant. But surprisingly reactive to criticism or unorthodoxy. Anticapitalist protest flourished and died in the 1960s. But the Just Stop Oil protests are essentially anticapitalist. They point at the motive power of capitalism. If capitalism was truly secure, it would shrug off these protestors. But the ludicrous sentences point to a vulnerability, a need to stifle such voices rather than debate with them in a way John Stuart Mill would recognise in his criticism of the church, pointing to an intolerance of criticism, a refusal to debate its tenets, as it ossified and died. But capitalism will take us all down with it, where the decline of the church was of no consequence. The point the anti oil protestors are making. I'm not comfortable with the sentences, but I'm not sure I agree with that comment. I think that is over thinking it. The sentences reflect a need to give the thronged masses what they yearn for. To show them that government (well the last one) is doing something about those people. Its not really anything to do with failure to engage in debate. You could be fully engaged in debate and still have people carrying out stunts that "the people" think must be stopped because of the disruption to their lives. The angle I'm aiming at is capitalism as an inevitable escalating unstoppable process. Humans are currently a part of it, but not necessarily part of its future. The disaster to which capitalism is leading/ has lead the humans is no concern of capitalism, which will continue through AI. The fate of humans, to be minced by the inevitability of the machine, unable to survive the climate conditions created by the process, is a detail of the development of capitalism. But the uncomprehending humans, too caught up in playing their part in onrushing escalation of capitalism, rush to defend it with righteous Ire if their automobile is hindered, or if a group point to the catastrophic climate change that will destroy their species caused by the fuel burning motive force. The foaming Daily Mail readers are the white blood cells of capitalism.

It was putting themselves and others in danger and leaving the emergency services to sort out the mess, lucky no one was killed. I have considerable sympathy/empathy with that stance, especially for their more extreme acts (I've not really looked to see which ones they have been prosecuted for). However there is at least another viewpoint to consider: that climate change is an existential threat to the whole of mankind, and certainly to large portions of it. And we are failing to sufficiently grasp it. And that itself warrants extraordinary actions to keep it high up the political agenda and in people's minds. Actions taht would not be warranted for less critical political issues. All they are doing is making people (who might otherwise support them) think they are nuts just out to disrupt things. Why don't they chain themselves to number 10? or scale parliament? Interrupt party conferences? Follow the PM and other ministers around with placards, give them no peace and make a huge political nuisance of themselves. Antagonising the people they want to support them is not the way to go. Super gluing yourself to a Motorway is suicidal and a huge danger to motorists.

Once capitalism hit its stride, it became powered by burning. GDP increases mirror increases in fossil fuel consumption. Historically, absolutely. With modern technology, I'm not sure they do. There are other perfectly viable and scalable energy sources than burning fossils these days, and we SHOULD be taking them up, not whinging at people that are telling us to. Fossil fuel burning has hit new record highs year on year including this year. The alternative energy sources you refer to are supplementing oil not replacing it. It is very human to comfort yourself with a story if a bright green future but take another look. It is too late.

The US says the floating pier designed to increase the amount of aid getting into the Gaza Strip will “soon cease operations”, less than two months after it was installed.
The announcement came after the US military were unable to re-anchor the pier this week because of “technical and weather-related issues”. It had to be removed on 28 June because of bad weather.
One only needs to look back to WW2 to see the difference in the mulberry harbours installed by the Yanks and the Brits obviously got no better since Technically, the WW2 "Mulberry Harbours" were just breakwaters, comprising giant concrete blocks and scuttled ships to plug gaps. The actual unloading took place on piers within the breakwaters. Whilst many of the concrete blocks are still there, the unloading piers are long gone. What the US have done in Gaza is to construct the unloading piers but without the protection of the surrounding breakwaters. Of course, so many conflicts around the world are proxy wars where the Great Powers get involved, at arm's length, to test their armaments and tactics without putting their own populations at risk. The US will have learnt from their experience in Gaza and will refine their designs.

It’s hot today in the UK, yet with major IT outage affecting airports, NHS, and trains, no COBRA meeting? Must be too hot to hold a meeting for ministers 😎

Labour have only been in power for 2 weeks, just think what they can achieve after 5 years.

It is a worldwide outage caused by one company. How is that Labour's fault?

I'm sure Agent is big enough and ugly enough to pipe up himself..... For the record though, I don't think there was much sarcasm. I don't think he likes Labour at all but I could be wrong...?

In 2010 there was a financial crisis and at the time Prime Minister Gordon Brown (and all his cabinet) couldn't talk about the problem without calling it a global problem. As soon as GB got kicked out of No 10 and DC took over, the word global disappeared from the Labour lexicon. Almost overnight it became a Tory problem.
I just thought this was a bit of Quid Pro Quo.

Should you consider somehwere different?
According to their embassy, 15-20k visitors annually. No cheap macs like in Vietnam, no cricket to watch like in Thailand. Very different indeed.
