Terrorist? Freedom fighter? Insurgent? Resistance fighter ? Its all up to how the paper portrays them and how stupid its readership is.
When fighting russia the taliban used to be known as the mujahadeen (still are I think?). I'm sure the emphasis then was more on the latter terms above rather than the former.

I thought that's what being in the armed forces was all about. To defend your country yes. Not to fight your fellow countrymen at the behest of a foreign power. No, to do what your employer - the legitimate government of the country - tells you to do. And that includes killing who they tell you to kill. Without asking why.

I wonder how we would have gotten on in WW2 if people were allowed to say "think I'll stay home today, don't realy fancy fighting a load of heavily armed Germans"

Now of course youve opened up the question of legitimacy. If you score a goal but then take the ball home & kill most of your opponents, dose that count as a legitimate?

What does he and Theresa May expect a UK government to do now? I understand his grief is genuine and there is no argument against that. I do think his rage should better be directed at those who poodled into war with our "special" friends the americans. I think it was Blair? Johnson's government has done nothing wrong in pulling out as fast as possible. They had no choice. Genuine veterans and those supporting them as Tugendhat appears to do should be forgiven but TM should be sacked from the Tory party for such opportunism. Most importantly, I hope our dear leaders understand further the need to butt out of other countries' problems.

michaelc don't forget that the US invoked article 5 of the NATO treaty after 9/11. So a bunch of terrorists from Saudi blow up a big building and kill thousands. That justifies invading an entire country? Had those Saudis been in the UK and for whatever reason we wouldn't arrest them, would the US be ok to invade us to ?

Heroin has caused more deaths than 9/11 or rather 11/9. What did the "allied" do to stop this?? Zero, perhaps?
Remember its alway the middle class that pays for everything. In lives, taxes, etc.. everything.
The general public didn't want a war yet here we are paid in British deaths & taxes. Who do you think is going pay for the Afghan refugees ?
