In Leeds we used to have a guy who went out with gnomes and small fishing rods and shot pastoral scenes at 2 in the morning. Leeds stepped up and any reported pot hole gets filled in 48 hours.

Wasn't there this thing years ago where people would spray paint a big penis around potholes then report them as obscene graffiti to the council so they got filled in faster? Sounds like another cock up.

Cars that are left parked get impounded, easy. Impounded by who, and on what legal basis?
I was widening a section of Torbay ring road many years ago, including providing a dedicated turn left lane at a junction. The land being used for the widening included an existing lay-by.
A week before we started on site we noticed that a car was parked in the lay-by (and probably had been for a period of time). It was taxed and legally parked so we asked the Police to contact the driver and get it moved. The police wouldn't get involved as parking is a mater for the local council. When we asked the Council to tow it away they said they couldn't as it was legally parked.
Whom.

1/2 fills a different pothole every couple of weeks on our lane . You may buy the complete works from B&Q for just under £25. It's self preservation. The only other users are farmers who couldn't give a toss. Their vehicles are untaxed because it is permitted to move, untaxed, between their far flung areas of work (i.e. fields). Some fields could be on the other side of the county.Sometimes it leaves one with a jaundiced view of agrics. I thought when they granted farmers this exemption, there was a limit on how far they could drive on our roads in their untaxed vehicles? This seems to suggest 1.5km. (Quite why the UK gov't doesn't just call it 'one mile' is another matter entirely...)

You are correct , of course, but in rural areas , where farmers regularly rent and swap barns and fields , moving heavy machinery wherever possible, it means the roads and lanes are relentlessly trashed. 1930's field systems are serviced by oversized tractors too large for the infrastructure. I could go on ,but you get the picture . Of course there is no time to bother about the wear and tear on lanes ,drains and potholes . Road repairs can't keep up and its easier to down grade or shut the lanes . One important access road has been officially closed for almost 3 years waiting for ...a 'badger bridge' to be built ( ). There is also acounty wide badger cull in progress.... Left Hand /Right Hand. Exit right ,gibbering ....

I could go on ,but you get the picture . Woah, hold on one moment... Tractor tyre pressures - so the point loads exerted onto road surfaces - are lower than those used in cars, let alone vans and trucks. Something like 1.8 bar is not unusual for road use for a big tractor, 26psi. A larger rigid truck like your local bin wagon will be running about 8.5bar, 125psi. A typical larger tractor in the UK weighs about 7.5-8t, the same as a small truck. Farmers don't use tractors that are bigger than they need to - because they're ferociously expensive both to buy and to run. That bin wagon will probably be about 26t GVW. Maximum vehicle widths for tractors - the most relevant dimension for rural roads - are the same as for trucks and vans, 2.55m, same as that bin wagon. Apart from the lanes, they've got to get through field gateways... And it's not just bin wagons - it's fire engines, the truck that delivers heating oil or gas, building supplies... Tractors that are used for purposes outside of the agricultural licence exemption also have to use road-duty-paid diesel, instead of red - and if you think HMRC aren't wise to people trying to pull a fast one there... The operator also needs an operator's licence, and - again - that's something DVSA are very hot indeed on...

You would like to think so Adrian, but out here in the Wild West its just not so and red diesel is king wherever you go ,even if its just to drive to the Spa. Gene Davies takes up 3 spaces when he drives his John Deer to the Surgery to collect his diabetes prescription and the same when he parks outside the pub to indulge in 9 pints. Tractors get bigger every five years when the interest free credit loan is renewed . Yes, we are all in thrall to that for the rest of our farming life. Gate posts ? You've got to be joking .

Saw a tractor today judging by the number plate about 10 years old I'm sure it wasn't much younger than the kid that was driving it

I very much doubt farmers care too much about getting stopped for fuel dips. Our local farmer drives his quad bike with a woolly hat on, his pick up has both rear lights broken.
As for tractors damaging roads, they may have low tyre pressures which are ok on tarmac, but due to the sheer size of them, they mount soft verges regularly resulting in all sorts of issues to roads edge damage, mud on the road and generally making a right mess.

Our local farmer drives his quad bike with a woolly hat on Umm, you do know helmets aren't a legal requirement on quads, right?

An amazing number of motorists mistakenly believe helmets are a legal requirement for cyclists and moan like hell about them "breaking the law" in this way.

An amazing number of motorists mistakenly believe helmets are a legal requirement for cyclists and moan like hell about them "breaking the law" in this way. Quad bike riders now legally required to wear helmet on public roads. Riders of four-wheel quad and all-terrain bikes are now required by law to wear a helmet when travelling on the public road network.30 Jun 2017
