Beyond horrifying, Any officer that though it was OK to cut a Sikh officers beard clearly has no cultural understanding. Reading that BBC report, the only people defending the Police are ex police "sergeants doing the work of 25 people" Perhaps it's worse in the Met, but I know of bad apples in the force in every area I've lived in. perhaps one of the worst things is that in many cases and I remember at least 10-12 cases where officers have been found guilty by the courts they then resign and the disciplinary system stops and they keep the pension. One I know of Senior officer caught kerb crawling in his own force area and the neighbouring one within the same week. He was taken to court, he was fined, but in mitigation his solicitor said if he was jailed he would lose his pension so please don't jail him. He went from court to see his GP and was signed off with stress and allowed to retire with an enhanced pension due to illness. Another scam was that the force were buying brand new cars to use for surveillance, and every few months these would be swapped. Members of officers families were able to buy these at silly low prices, several officers were disciplined when it was found they were effectively taking orders for cars and having extras put on to meet what people who would be buying them wanted.

It doesn't horrify me the slightest. Many people know that coppers in this country have a very ugly culture. They are generally far from being the brightest or most sophisticated people in the land and therefore I'm not surprised that they find it to be "funny" to cut a Sikh man's beard off or to go through initiation ceremonies where they assault people in the showers etc.

Worse than I thought actually.
I mean it sounds a bit like being back at school.
Not sure what the solution is. As someone alluded to, below a certain IQ we descend into behaving like apes it would seem.

stuff like they had a plan, and if the word landslide appeared they should all leave the group and start a new one, "briefings" saying they may come after all of us check your facebook and whatsapp, to me implies senior officers knew, and condoned the behaviour, "just don't get caught". the issue for me goes further that if they split the met up then you will end up with a lot more cost in senior management.
But as others have said and I agree it isn't just an issue in the met, it's Police culture. And it's not just each other it's the public. Someone I know was puled over for speeding on his motorbike, he insisted he wasn't doing 90MPH as the officer claimed and took it to court, he was told it's my word against yours who will the court believe.
6 times he took a day off for court and 5 times the case was adjourned as the officer was day off or on leave, on the final occasion the Magistrates told the Police Solicitor that they had 2 hours to get him there or they would dismiss the case, ended up case dismissed, he drove out of the court car park and was instantly lit up by a police car, driven by the officer concerned who told him he was driving on a suspended licence, as he knew he's just been banned. He insisted on being arrested ! taken to the local station where after being booked in he then asked to speak to a senior officer and explained the situation, officer concerned was given a warning, but for months afterwards he kept being stopped by various offiers for petty things.
The Dalian Atkinson incident tells you a lot

You must have been to a truly dreadful school. You must have been home schooled. No. I went to a school with a normal amount of bullying. The kind of stuff in that report would have seen expulsions in short order.

Lighten up people. They reflect our society . Most of you must live in a middle class bubble.... Compared to the rest of the world we are the most tolerant society around ,including our police force who have to deal with our and it rubs off.

I'd be surprised if any woman who's ever lived in the London area was remotely shocked by this report. And all the backside-covering 'bad apple' apologists who belittle women fearful for their safety are an utter disgrace. Mark Rowley's statement gave me no confidence he understands the impact whatsoever. I have unlimited admiration for the decent officers - particularly the women - who have been working in this environment. Absolutely shameful.

If there is a culture of you're either one of the team or you're ostracised that is going to encourage erstwhile decent officers to behave badly. What set of rules should be top down enforced that could stop this? I think its impossible.
