www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65128073To be frank not a shock to those of us who have worked with them. one incident that come to mind IT detected porn being viewed on a computer in a firestation. Station commander was told there was an issue with a PC, and it needed to be collected and replaced, I was sent with an Auditor who was tasked with copying the station log book for that day so it could be narrowed down as to who it was. We arrive to find mysteriously the computer has been dropped and the station log which was chained to the front desk has vanished. It's part of the culture and the system that they are a team and stick together

BT policy on this was simple, no tolerance at any level. IT devices were actively monitored for accessing suspect sites , or search terms associated with porn or drugs by software. I had to explain my search for datura was to buy plants for their flowers not narcotic effects, fortunately I had purchased some and has invoices to prove it. People caught just disappeared into suspension and were then sacked. A high flying local manager was sacked even though the access was by his teenage son using his works laptop, it was simple, his laptop, passwords, access security token used, his responsibility, end of. I could not believe my local council who just forced early retirement on a staff member. Normal terms , 3 years pensionable pay, pension enhanced to max of 6 and 2\3 years, wow what a punishment!

It's part of the culture and the system that they are a team and stick together A strong bond like this is perfectly understandable when your life is at risk every day and your immediate colleagues are the only people watching your back. Same in the police and I daresay the armed forces. Their working lives are streets away from the politicians, desk pilots and armchair commentators sitting in judgement. First walk a mile in a man's shoes...

We arrive to find mysteriously the computer has been dropped and the station log which was chained to the front desk has vanished. That's not carte blanche for the kind of gross misconduct that'd get you sacked in an instant in any other environment. Quite the opposite - it's the kind of hand-wave acceptance that's led to the problems getting so bad. If it was all about the "strong bond", you wouldn't have a response like this from the union: www.fbu.org.uk/news/2023/03/29/fbu-statement-equalities-and-fire-service-culture"The publication of the Independent Culture Review in November 2022 revealed serious issues in the London Fire Brigade, including widespread complaints about misogyny, racism, homophobia and harassment. ... Equality is a trade union principle and a priority for the FBU. We deplore abusive and discriminatory behaviour in our service. Firefighters have the right to work without fear of being mistreated because of their gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability or neurodiversity - or bullied or abused while doing their job. Just as much as fire contaminants and unsafe working practices, this kind of toxic culture is a matter of health and safety in the workplace.
While some of the revelations contained in recent reports are shocking, some do not come as a surprise. Bullying, harassment and discrimination go unreported or overlooked. There is evidence that some principal managers have abused their positions and escaped accountability. Complainants have found themselves under investigation or subject to disciplinary proceedings. ... Our All Different All Equal policy sets out our commitment to equalities in our approach to casework; where necessary we have confronted discrimination and harassment in our own ranks. ... The matters of culture and equality will be a focus of our annual conference in May, with delegates debating how to continue to drive forward an agenda into our industry."

Its not in the same category as a few firefighters having a laugh watching stuff they're not supposed to on their break?

I can remember an incident with a social workers laptop being used to access inappropriate sites, It was proven that the sites were accessed, and that images were downloaded. He claimed in the disciplinary hearing that it was his wife who did it. He was told not to allow her to do it again. Compare that to BT, it's almost as bad as the courts with different punishments for the same crime.

And the desk jockeys sneaking around with an IT guy and an auditor to catch them out just perpetuates the "them versus us" mindset. Might a quiet word with the Station Commander have sorted the problem (and saved a computer and station log to boot)?

That's grown in magnitude over the simple "porn being viewed" in your original post.

Very few of their lives are on the line at any time. If they are able to sit down and watch porn ,they obviously don't have enough to do to earn their wages . Shift system? Get them to do something else with their hands . Doesn't happen at my local station . They are 99% volunteer and half of them are sturdy women who could break anyone's arm and carry 4 lambs at a time.
