from what I gather from someone who has starlink it's a separate router, and can be flaky indeed the guy I know who has it has it connected to his own router as that was the only way to get reliable connections.
a news article I saw today suggests that BT are looking at partnering with starlink for rural notspots

I have until April to sort this out so have a bit time to experiment. Starlink sounds good but too expensive. Is the aerial ( on roof)a plug in extension to standard routers? No, you get an all-in-one thing. Aerial, router, cables. www.starlink.com/specifications

Thanks for all the responses. Looks like the router with extended aerial and a 3 sim may be the best route. My mobile is with lebara, cheap and good but uses Vodafone which has a weaker signal compared to 3. Will let you know how I get on.

...but uses Vodafone which has a weaker signal compared to 3. Don't forget Voda and 3 are merging at the mo. The inevitable result will be that you'll be able to use both cell towers. For me, on Three (Smarty) in the arse end of nowhere, that'll be great because Voda are one of the least-worst round here.

It could be worse for the other customers from the better network by sharing.

Merging , That's good.maybe it will happen in time for me to add a sim from lebara. Some of the deals via MSE have been great. Voda dont seem to have kept up with competitors. Funny I did get a great signal in the Sahara desert once on vodaphone, crazy when I get a poor signal compared to other networks here in the UK sticks.

It's just going through the harrumphing at the mo. commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cdp-2023-0227/The developing world has superb cellular service - in large part because they've never had any landline, so it was no-comms or cellular... We were in up-river Gambia 20yrs ago, staying at a village eco-lodge, and all you could understand of what the young lads were saying was "nokia-ericson-nokia-ericson"... Mobile internet has transformed many rural communities, because it's enabled so much data interchange they never had - market prices, micro-loans, etc. ...and, of course, it's been a huge driver of migration, because they can see what we in the west have so much more easily, and want some of it... Who can blame them?
