Nobody's saying EVERYTHING has to be within 15mins, let alone for EVERYBODY. The original 15min city concept is a simple one: "Everyone living in a city should have access to essential urban services within a 15 minute walk or bike."www.15minutecity.com/aboutDoesn't that sound like a good thing to you? Does to me. It's an excellent aspiration for future cities. Doesn't map well onto existing infrastructure though.
But it's nothing new. When they built mass council housing in the 1950s, they incorporated schools, parklands, surgeries and shops into local estates. I lived in one as a kid. Fields where we could kick a ball full tilt. Nowadays house builders get away with the minimum possible spec the law allows. It's quite disgusting what they're allowed to pass off as a modern estate these days. Nowhere for kids to run free, no shops, schools or surgeries, just profit is everything. A terrible legacy for the future, kids growing up with postage stamp gardens. but in many cases it COULD, if only people were to understand that being able to drive everywhere and have the infrastructure shaped around the car is not an entitlement. Relatively small changes could make big differences. For example, narrow some of the roads and create dedicated separated cycle lanes. The objective is walk, cycle or some other form of active travel, not just walk. Treat the cycle paths that there are with more respect. Round here there is quite a reasonable - extensive - network of shared use path. That's good. But on the other hand, in many places, over the years so much 'street furniture' has been embedded that there are significant sections that are nothing short of dangerous obstacle courses.

Here's mine.
Can you walk to a GP surgery in less than 15 minutes? Probably more like 20 to mine, but it can be cycled in less than 10.
Can you walk to a Dentists surgery in less than 15 minutes. Yes, just. But could be cycled in a much shorter time.
But without secure bike storage, I don't. Even though I like to cycle.
Can you get to a shop to buy clothes shoes etc in less than 15 minutes? Yes, if I want to wear F&F clothing. Or buy them from a charity shop. But this is not a priority: I nearly always buy my clothes online. Buying clothes in the real world can be a special trip, or an add-on to another trip.
Can you walk to a Theatre that has live music by known bands in less than 15 minutes? No.
Can you walk to a cinema showing new releases in less than 15 minutes? No, but it could be cycled. I can however get there with a very short train journey, and less than 15 minutes walking in total.
How safe would you feel on public transport in your area after 10pm? What's public transport outside of the big cities? I've never used a bus in my home area. I did use a bus the other day, which is my first use in the UK for many years. It didn't turn up at the time that the app was showing. In fact it didn't turn up at all. Having wasted 25+ minutes waiting for it, we decided to use a taxi for the return leg. Edit: to be fair, if I'm using the train then I'm happy. I have however in the distant past got beaten up by some thug on the underground when I lived in London. Never been mugged for anything though.
Do you know your local councillor? Yes, and he even turned up at our doorstep. Not to canvas, but to follow-up on an issue my wife had reported. Which he had picked up via a Facebook post. To check it had been sorted OK. He's new though I think: I'm sure the novelty will wear off.
Do you know what your councillor should do? Not exactly.
Have you written to your local MP in the last 2 years? No. but sort of. I wrote to the candidates in my seat a couple of weeks ago. On a particular topic. The response from the one who was the MP was rubbish. Having sort his view on something, he spent the whole time avoiding answering it. A waste of electrons. One of the other candidates wrote a shorter, much more thoughtful / considered response. Not heard from the rest.

So... full answers from me.
Can you walk to a GP surgery in less than 15 minutes? No. Ten mile round trip.
Can you walk to a Dentists surgery in less than 15 minutes No. Ten mile round trip. God knows where the nearest NHS dentist is.
Can you get to a shop to buy clothes shoes etc in less than 15 minutes No. Ten mile round trip, forty to wider choice.
Can you walk to a Theatre that has live music by known bands in less than 15 minutes Just about, if you include the rural arts program and the village hall. Major international annual arts festival ten mile round trip.
Can you walk to a cinema showing new releases in less than 15 minutes Again, just about if you include village hall. Small but expensive cinema ten mile round trip, bigger forty mile.
How safe would you feel on public transport in your area after 10pm Two mile round trip to nearest bus stop, with one bus a week each way to the city. Ten mile round trip to a more frequent bus service. Forty mile round trip to the nearest railway station.
Do you know your local councillor Yes. He's a prop for his ribbon. His predecessor was excellent.
Do you know what your councillor should do Yes. I deal with him frequently with my parish council hat on.
Have you written to your local MP in the last 2 years Yes, with my parish council hat on. It was not a fulfilling experience, although if you believe the councillor... Not within two years, as a constituent, because whenever I've tried previously it's been pointless.

Ok, I'll bite . A rather unconventional voting tactic . Tactical voting by you, or had they done something sh**ty outside politics? Did s/he support Brexit? He wasn't your mugger, was he? iirc it was during the extended nadir of Johnson's time as PM - COVID inquiry, partygate number n, cronyism and incompetence writ large, Brexit continuing to be a complete mess, Northern Ireland a complete mess, the batshit wing of the party on the rise, etc etc etc. I couldn't bring myself to do anything that could be interpreted as support for the government at the time.

I thought places of religious worship are essential places, at least they were allowed during “lockdown” a few years back. Yeah , plenty around within 15 minutes. 🤣🤣🤣 Oh, yes, I'd forgotten about that - that's the one non-residential property I could walk to in 15min. I think they hold one service a month there now, for a congregation in single figures... Lol like here a chapel on nearly every street, and if you have three churchgoing families in adjacent houses almost certainly 3 different chapels. and of course being Wales we still have quite a few tin tabernacles ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tin_tabernacle ) locally. being in one of those in heavy rain or hail is an experience

While I count 82 in England, your link suggests there are only 9 left in all of Wales now: 3 in the north, 3 in the west, 2 in the Valleys and one in the 'diff. If we ever find ourselves inside one of your Valleys pair, our odds of the heavy rain clouting on the tin experience are in our favour though!

Guess I might as well chip in here
Can you walk to a GP surgery in less than 15 minutes? No, it's a 30 minute walk away in the middle of town.
Can you walk to a Dentists surgery in less than 15 minutes No, it's a 30 minute walk away in the middle of town.
Can you get to a shop to buy clothes shoes etc in less than 15 minutes No it's a 30 minute walk away in the middle of town.
Can you walk to a Theatre that has live music by known bands in less than 15 minutes How many more times do I have to tell you this. No it's a 30 minute walk away in the middle of town.
Can you walk to a cinema showing new releases in less than 15 minutes Have a f***ing guess, how many more times, it's a 30 minute walk away in the middle of town.
Right, i've had enought of this nonsense, I'm going down the pub, and as you've probably already guessed it's a 30 minute walk away in the middle of town.

Well, in these days where you may see an 'associate' in place of a real doctor at your GP surgery, the lines are blurring, so it could be the clothes shop doing dentistry before long...

I know the couple that own and run the clothes shop. He used to be a builder. So at least he does know how to handle a drill and a caulk gun...

Send me a link... I could do with £15 for free. The survey outcome will probably be manipulated to deliver the desired outcome anyway. I might as well benefit.
