Going back to the first poster, I compare this with online games, and time used trawling ebay. Games are a total waste of time. Ebay, one ends up spending all the money one can lead their hand on if hooked up. This, at least I can have fun and have the possibility of getting a return. The amount of time I spend is more on this forum rather than the platforms themselves. (Bad forum. ) True I think its all this forums fault, I do not spend very much time on the individual platforms either

We apologise. We will do our very best to make it worse. Sorry to pull you up on gramma 'unc' but you mean worser..., or is it worserer?

Most people settle for the simpler "more worse".

Ok, there is a concept called "Gamification" which is the achieving of "scores" when carrying out basic activities. It is especially used in computer games where the scores on the top of the screen show you how you are doing and is actually addictive (and a little sad). Most of the P2P use a little of this "brain-suck" to keep you attracted. If there are any scores like "% rates" or "invested" then Gamification is being used (even if the Portal development staff don't know it) There is a very good course on this at Coursera (for free) and there are a bunch of chat room forums on the whole thing. This is not the same as "gaming" which is very different. So yes, you are being addicted into something and it needs education and push back. I, for instance only let myself go into each portal once per day unless a deal is going down. Institute this procedure now.

A new interest could help such as ferret racing or maybe start a cat sanctuary?

A new interest could help such as ferret racing or maybe start a cat sanctuary? I see your already at stage 3... 1. Denial. I'm not addicted to P2P, I just enjoy the process of investing to help my future. 2. Anger. It's not my fault if I'm presented with great investment products... and if I was addicted to P2P it's no business of yours to pass judgment on me, dammit 3. Bargaining. If I cut down the hours I spend on P2P and find an alternative 'healthy' pass time, would that improve my life and your judgment of me? 4. Depression. But I've already tried to cut the time spent and I keep getting drawn back in when a new opportunity presents itself, there's no hope! 5. Acceptance. Guess I'll never get out completely, I'm now resigned to sit in this chair for the rest of my days clicking, reading and typing. Oh joy.

Guess there are worse things to be addicted to. Like cat sanctuaries for instance.

Beer! I have discovered that there is an inverse relationship between interest in P2P/forums and number of pints consumed. And now for the science bit. oldgrumpy , thats your cue.

... The issue is, I enjoy doing it, but lately I've been feeling that increasing compulsion to log into the different accounts to look things over. ... This time could be better spent on such things as going outside, career improvement, earning extra income, spending more time with family and friends. There's nothing wrong with taking a break in forum participation and it can free up a lot of time for other activities. Just resolve "I will copy what James did for a few weeks and not read or post on the P2P Independent Forum at all during the month of January". If if you like colder turkey, for the few months I've been largely abstaining from MSE. You should also treat it seriously. Having an adverse effect on other life activities is one of the symptoms of an addiction and it isn't impossible for even something as apparently harmless as forum participation from having substantial negative effects. Does time spent on research really yield an edge ? it definitely can, if you believe me being among the top 20% of investors at Bondora who've had 10k or more Euros invested for a few years. Or the 30% or so XIRR I've seen from some other P2P investing. Or in general a range of other things that do seem to deliver me better results than average. However, the followup question is whether the time spent yields a sufficient return on that time compared to its value for other activities.
