I can't help but think we may be a bit optimistic with the "Bots are dead!"
A bot will still be faster at spotting the part for sale, opening the page in the browser, and completing all the purchase form bar the Captcha. So our botmeister is working away on something more interesting, gets a ping! and a ready-completed SS part-purchase page come up, ready to tick the box (and maybe a quick glance to see if any of the swimming pools are his own), then clicketyclacketybought.
Does it remove the total automation of bots? Yes. Does it increase the workload on those with hyooge appetites? Yes. Will it dissuade a swathe of them? Yes. Does it level the playing field? Not completely.

Ah but the botmeisters will still need to sit at the computer to complete their purchase, rather than the computer doing it for them whilst they are sipping Pimms while on the balcony of their desert island villa. They'll be gutted

I suspect the full auto, hands-free, no effort aspect of bottery is one of the main attractions so this should significantly reduce their activity. Still a massive step forward. <EDIT> crossed with Highlandtiger

Amazing system. It must be happy that I'm human as I've bought a couple of bits without even having to complete a visual test (just ticking the box). Game over for the bots and well done savingstream It doesn't think I'm human then

Game over for the bots and well done savingstream It doesn't think I'm human then Reading a bit about how reCaptcha works, views seem to be that movements of the mouse across the screen (on a desktop / laptop) are part of the analysis. I wonder if you're more likely to get the visual quiz using a tablet or mobile?

I just got past the tick a couple of times but found the quiz images quite difficult, not knowing how many images make up the right answer, and the pictures aren't all that clear. I don't evn know if the answers were right, but I was too slow anyway. You should stop eating bananas and start eating carrots instead.

There will never be a level playing field; what people want to know is that SS have everybody’s best interest at heart (not just the ones with the most money), and with this one gesture they have shown it. Once again, well done SS

I suspect it'll still be difficult for a while as all those who'd given up trying want to take a test-ride !
Be interesting to see the effects once a new one goes live.

Wellllll ... I got a red bar across the screen with "Ooops!" in it. Spent a while looking for a box to put a tick in - decided red bar IS the tick-box. Ticking it it had no perceivable effect. Guess what? "Fully funded" Very nice to at least see some credible offers on-screen - for several seconds at least !

Maybe SS themselves are selling some parts just to see how it goes? certainly more (smallish) parts for sale this AM than there have been for weeks, even counting the ones the bots have been gobbling before now. Now if we could just do something about everyone choosing to sell at midnight ... 8>.

Of all the possible solutions to bots, adding a CAPTCHA is by far the laziest, and also the smallest step forward. For instance, I have twice seen purchases vanish before the captcha had even appeared!
It makes no difference to me whether it's bots that stop me investing or anything else.
The current system favours fastest fingers, fastest computer and fastest internet connection, not to mention, people who have time on their hands. And without discussing the technicalities, I for one could easily write something that would defeat the tick box nonsense using traditional programming tools (unless it goes further by showing images). Thus, in combination with browser extensions, if the intention to cheat is there, people will find a way.
It's also worth mentioning again what I said in another thread: the current system violates equalities legislation, because it places disabled people at a distinct disadvantage. It would only take one person to complain, and SS would have to ditch it.
