In my opinion not only are such programmes highly dangerous and a massive compromised to your security and I wouldn't use one with a barge pole there is the other argument that they should be banned and not promoted because they are basically cheating . can you imagine the reaction of the Halifax or NatWest if they found out people were bolting on these sorts of scripts to their online banking websites to get special information and alerts before everybody else. I can't condone it for two reasons the first being the obvious risk of what will happen to the script and what malware will end up on your account and secondly there is the moral argument that you are amending and changing the way a website works which must be borderline against the law if it gives you special permissions and privileges that was not intended and bear in mind this is a financial website where people's money is The FCA will take a very dim view of a website where this is able to be going on and what I don't understand is why the people who are writing the Scripts and bots do not realise that their greed in trying to gain an edge is going to kill their own Golden Goose and everyone elses as well Hello another scaremongerer, regarding Halifax, NatWest or any other banks. I have been using First Direct Internet Banking Plus designed by eWise since 2004/2005. It is a tool that allows you to see the balances of all your accounts (for lots of different banks and building societies) in just one place. You can even log into your third party banks with 1 click. Egg had their own Egg Money Manager and I have used another one in the past.

However the Luddites lost the argument, so automation is basically the way we're headed.

As I see it, we're heading to platforms more open to automation by the user, not the other way around as proposed here.
Big p2p American sites like Lending Club and Prosper offer API (basically an interface for computer programs only). The more data they put available the better for transparency, statistics, studies, strategies. And of course, you have to put this data in a proper way for computer (using API or open formats), and then solutions appear, open source or not. I don't see nothing wrong with that.
The problem I see currently is when you trust your login details to a third party service so it can bring the convenience of managing your balances etc (be that banking accounts, p2p sites, rewards programs...). That's when I press the stop button. For now.

Finally, there is relatively little a site can do to prevent scripts like this. I'm not sure I agree with that statement jonah . The easiest way a platform can prevent the use of such scripts is to implement functionality on the platform that renders their use redundant. Can't argue with this sentiment. Engineering out a problem can be a solution. I was more thinking within the remit of the current scope of a site as opposed to a wholesale rebuild. Personally my favourite p2p site from an IT perspective is AC for precisely the reason you suggested. That said, your implicit point that I should make sure I think of alternatives before making sweeping statements.

I have used algos/bots on FC/SS/MT for years. It's a logical response to a platform that hasn't provided the infrastructure to trade loans in an automated manner on their PM or SM. I don't want to have to sit at my screen at 4pm for MT.... MoneyThing sounds like there are people using bots on your site... might want to rethink your approach in this area.
