Hi everybody, We have updated the forum rules (see here). The changes are based on feedback from all of you, and on our experiences in terms of moderation and administration of the forum since its inception. The salient points are:- 1. Posts must be in English - we are not multi-lingual, neither do we speak Morse code. 2. The rule concerning multiple accounts has been simplified to make it clear that permission must be sought, and received from, the moderators in advance of opening a second forum account. You might be interested to know that, to date, we have identified fifty such occurrences. Many are innocuous, or there for valid reasons. Some have been, to varying degrees, less innocent, for instance platform reps having multiple undeclared accounts, repeat perma-ban people trying to sneak back in, and accounts used as sock-puppets. 3. The footnote concerning the non-identification of borrowers has been clarified to include guarantor(s) and borrower staff. The exception with regard to naming borrowers who's details are made publicly available by platforms has been removed to allow consistent moderation throughout the forum. We understand that this last point is both contentious and frustrating, however until somebody offers to underwrite the risks the forum and the mod / admin team run in volunteering here no amount of (sometimes verging on arbitrary) commentary from anonymous forumites is going to supersede the legal advice already taken on behalf of the forum. There is a definite tension between our desire to be neither overly-prescriptive nor too dogmatic on the one hand and having a small set of simple rules on the other. Just like in real life situations will arise that are not covered by the rules, or where inconsistencies might be found. Common sense is a good arbiter. To this last point, it would seem to be an opportune moment to remind everybody that we are volunteers, human, capable of making mistakes, and occasionally have divergent views on issues as they arise. The more you make our lives easier in terms of running the forum, the better the forum runs for everybody. Thanks, RM

Some have been, to varying degrees, less innocent, for instance platform reps having multiple undeclared accounts, repeat perma-ban people trying to sneak back in, and accounts used as sock-puppets. That does not come as a surprise to me... I won't mentions names or the lender concerned, BUT one Friday or Saturday evening for some reason and just by chance, some considerable time ago, I was watching the named users on this website. I noted one of these identified platform reps who was signed in, then that rep signed out, then almost immediately another named username was signed in. After a while whilst I was watching that user name signed out, then almost immediately again another username sign in briefly and then signed out... ...and so forth! Then finally the platform rep signed in a again! I thought it odd and had my suspicions, that this particular platform rep had multiple accounts! Some months later, when Administrator of this website, mrclondon posted this; Your responsibility for posted content p2pindependentforum.com/thread/5644/responsibility-posted-contentIt was this particular line, from the above posting that caught my attention... I C&P mrclondon; "Needless to say, any platform smearing a competitor platform risks exposure and severe damage to its reputation, over and above any legal implications."I thought to myself, so you have noticed something too... I didn't have the IP address information obviously, but just one observation, one evening, by chance...

We'd ask that any such concerns or observations of suspicious posting be reported to the Mod team using "Report Post". It is easy for us then to check IP address records but the process of looking for associations is manual, not automated.

Sorry, this is not the significant take-out, but for my own understanding - are sock-puppets two accounts 'facing' and talking to each other? Also, for clarity, does English preclude txt speak? Thanks.

Wow, you're always posting things that are so insightful and bang-on-the-money. Wow. That sort of thing. We can but hope so.

sock puppet noun a simple hand puppet made from a sock. a person whose actions are controlled by another. "a brainless sock puppet who only knows what to say because his handlers feed him his lines" a false online identity, typically created by a person or group in order to promote their own opinions or views. "both sides in the debate use sock puppets to make it seem as if scores of people are arguing a point"(my bold) As for text speak, well, no, it's not against the forum rules. But as with anything else like this does using it aid understanding? If not.... Is using it trying to subvert or evade another forum rule? If so.... don't. Similarly use of acronyms is fine (sorry uncletone), but use of them to try to evade rules about, for instance, bad language, is not. One other point, because there are rules there are necessarily gaps and grey areas - this is not an excuse to bait or taunt the moderators. The rules exist to allow us to manage a large and diverse community effectively, not for people to score internet clever clogs points. There are 2800 members, there are nine moderators / admins. Can you imagine trying to chair a town hall meeting, daily, of three hundred odd people?

Are you saying we are odd?
Even me?

Are you saying we are odd? Even me? but I think it is all to easy to lose sight of the fact that predominately we are a group of extremely privledged people who have sufficeint wealth so as to be comfortable taking onboard the investment risk that we do. In that sense, when compared to the EU population of over 500 million, we are indeed the odd people.

I quite often see posts with bits of Latin, (generally I believe legal terms). Will this now not be allowed?

I quite often see posts with bits of Latin, (generally I believe legal terms). Will this now not be allowed? The English language continues to evolve, with text speak (LOL, AFAIK, IMHO) and new words (brexit, fracking) being formally documented by the Oxford English Dictionary every quarter, as well as continuing to borrow words and phrases from other languages (hors d'oeuvre, quod erat demonstrandum, affidavit). This is a long established principal of our language. The common sense interpretation of a rule that says posts must be in English, is the post should be intelligible on reading by the average educated person who has a reasonably wide and current vocabularly knowledge as well as a decent grasp of the grammar of the English language.

(*Edit - I ask so I can make sure my other alt accounts don't break the rules) You need to contact the moderators/ administrators before you create any additional accounts explaining why you require them. As I recall the other accounts you mention are no longer operational. If you still hold multiple accounts that are operational, I would suggest you contact us now. As registerme said we are aware of quite a number of these and will be getting round to dealing with them in due course.
