Has anyone tried to estimate their hourly rate from p2p? Taking my 2016/17 tax return figure (which does include some loans totally written off but where there may be some recovery) and a rough guess at the time I spend I get a figure of about £20. There is not much work that I would do for that rate of pay but p2p is also almost a hobby, which I do not exactly enjoy, especially when I have a loss, but does give a sense of satisfaction.

A very, very good question littleoldlady. I'm in the same boat as you and whilst I haven't worked out my hourly rate I'm sure I wouldn't do actual work for it! Hobby, yes, not exactly enjoy, definitely yes. It's becoming (actually it has become) drudgery I think with all of us it's the now massive burden of DD from having very dodgy Loans regularly foisted on us by You Know Who. And then you're building trust in Someone only for stuff to come out of the woodwork eventually. It's a difficult call but I'm intending to get my life back and move slowly into Funds. Problem is of course that the "good" Funds are all very expensive at the mo. Anyone out there got any ideas, probably around Alternative Investments I'd have thought? Buy a Classic car (Ferrari?), Wine, Banksy or similar, ?? etc etc First World Problem of course, wot 2 do with yer dosh!!!!?

I went to look at new Discovery the other day - they had one of the last landrover defenders - client bought for 32k and now turning down offers of £63k - standard off shelf defender zero miles - double yer money in a year - not bad...

About 5€/hour.
However all of my other hobbies have a negative return. Take skiing with the family for example: -100€/hour.
If I treated it like a job, I could easily be 10x more efficient because all of the platforms essentially run themselves.

About £30-40 / hour unless I include the amount of time I spend on moderating / administrating the forum in which case it goes down to pennies / hour in a bad month(*).
* All figures assume that I maintain my current default rate and my current aggregate level of investment.

No, there's nothing remiss here at all . It's just easy to forget the hours that can be demanded by a forum like this. Most months it's doesn't amount to much, perhaps a couple of hours across a month. I suspect that the worst months, with multiple complex situations that require moderation and / or intervention, might require upwards of twenty to forty hours attention just from me. I don't resent that one little bit. I gain enormously from the insight, experience and wisdom of other forumites, and sometimes very clearly and specifically in terms of their google fu and due diligence abilities.

My hobby of 'investing' with Ladbrokes , William Hill etc also has a negative return

If I exclude the amount of time I waste on this forum probably about £200 an hour

Great question!
There is quite a large proportion here who don't currently work.
I do and also have a choice everyday as to work on my day job or P2P. I tried the other day to see which paid best per hour
I do enjoy it though, but I am geeky like that with finance stuff
It depends on your size of portfolio and hours spent
People don't generally share their portfolio size!
Generally I probably spend 3-4hrs a day on P2P, including dealing, evaluating and research
How long for everyone else? How long on all you types of investments?

A good question. However, when calculating our pay I think it's not good enough simply to look at return and divide it by (estimated) hours.
The "return" part of the equation should really be the incremental return above what we could have earned with a totally hands off approach.
So lets say you have worked hard at your P2P and got 10% return (after fees and losses).
The baseline might be 1% if you consider cash (so 9% incremental). Or you could say 4% if you consider something like 1 year investments in RS, or QAA in AC, which are very low effort. That would make your incremental return only 6%...

Some fascinating replies here... if the truth be told, i'm probably just a couple of pence an hour at the moment Still relatively new to this game, with just a few k spread around, finding my feet & learning as I go.
