Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions.
It looks like it remains impossible to close an account, and as far as I can determine nobody has actually managed to ever do so.
I'm now at the next stage of the FC formal complaints process and am awaiting a response. Will post again if I have any luck!

Although I have not closed my account I have just sold everything I can and transferred out the funds leaving only the bad debt to sit and fester. I have deleted the link from my spreadsheet so to me it's closed, dead, of no more interest!!!

I have just one defaulted loan with FC to the value of about £18 which is paying back at 6p per month, so about 25 years to fully repay and I can't even withdraw these meagre sums.
There is the prospect of the borrower selling a property he owns in Spain but there has been no progress with that for some time. I would quite happily donate whatever is repaid to be rid of my FC account.
