Meanwhile AZ vaccine is being actively refused by doctors and other groups across Europe. Thousands of healthcare workers are refusing to take the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine over concerns about side effects and efficacy, with some arguing that they should be prioritized for the more effective doses from Pfizer and Moderna.AND: A group representing 3,000 doctors in Italy wrote a letter to the Italian government last week demanding that “private doctors and dentists be inoculated with mRNA vaccines” like those developed by Moderna and Pfizer and BioNTech, as opposed to AstraZeneca’s “since there is evidence they are more effective.” www.forbes.com/sites/jemimamcevoy/2021/02/21/european-healthcare-workers-are-refusing-astrazeneca-vaccine-over-efficacy-concerns/Edit: I don't have an "agenda" to bash the UK or anything like that. My motivation is I "need" to travel and spend a lot of time in a country where the population hasn't been vaccinated and won't be for at least 9 months. Life is on hold until I get the vaccine (I'm in group 6) and 3 weeks after that I'm away.
Maybe someone could put me at some ease by pointing to evidence that shows the AZ should at least in all livelihood protect me against serious illnes? I don't really care too much about getting C-19 in a mild form. My feeling at this point is that the pfizert is a better vaccine but the AZ is a LOT LOT better than not getting vaccinated ? How true is that ? I think we can all feel your understandable anxiety. I'd try not to be too concerned with which one I was offered because at the end of the day it's outside of your control (and I assume/hope you'd take whatever was offered). I appreciate it's easy for me to say. If I were you I'd be more interested in when to flee. Following the 1st dose, 2nd dose or booster in the autumn (and potential future shots)? Could I return easily for future jabs etc (perhaps being required to serve a managed quarantine)?

Question to all men: If you had to choose between a wonderful wife and a really nice car, what would you pick? Petrol or electric? All men? Are you the Honourable Member for the 18th century

Apparently London has the lowest vaccination rate in the country. Aside from my selfish interest, that can't be a good thing. It's the same with childhood vaccinations (rates in London below all other regions). I guess many of those families/communities who don't get their kids vaccinated won't get vaccinated for covid? I just hope that local health teams are getting the resources they need to try and contact everyone who is eligible but hasn't taken up the vaccine offer.

/Mod hat on I'm just going to lock this thread for a few minutes to move all the imperial/metric posts into their own thread. Ta. Edit: unlocked. New thread is here. Rather a dry thread title so feel free to suggest (clean) alternatives ( adrianc can edit it if they wish).

This discussion of metric/imperial brings us nicely around to NASA and Mars.... solarsystem.nasa.gov/missions/mars-climate-orbiter/in-depth/Note the use of "English" units as distinct from "imperial". Is there sensitivity regarding the use of the word "imperial" in this context? Genuine question, I don't want to provoke another tribal discussion. I have never heard them being called "English" units before and fundamentally object to that name given that for most things the English use SI units, and because they were if anything British. But I'd object to them being called British too, as you might predict. I must get out more.... It appears that "English units" are a thing, see here. The mix-up on the Orbiter was due to the manufacturer, LM, using "United States customary units" (see here) which are based on English units in use up to 1826, I kid you not. Well, that's if you believe Wikipedia. I just assumed they meant imperial and did the usual English=British yank thing that hacks off the Scots, Welsh & Northern Irish no end.

Talking of Mars, I have to decide whether to watch the landing or Arsenal - hard to know which will be the most likely to show any excitement. Didn't Wenger ban Mars (bars)?

NASA live stream begins 19:15 with landing scheduled for 20:55 (UK times): "Perseverance" would be my choice of name if I were going to set up a new P2P outfit I'm not a fan of the vast sums of money which are wasted on space exploration, but the lander (which looks like it was invented by Caractacus Potts) may well be worth a look later this evening. Can I ask why you think it's wasted? I guess you're not against R&D spending but just that on space exploration? I think NASA's budget is pretty small beer given the size of the US economy and besides a large proportion of that is aligned with defence spending (which is vast). I do think here in the UK we're suffering from a lack of spending on R&D from many governments of different colours. I'd argue that we want to be one of those countries with high R&D expenditure as a proportion of GDP. From the viewpoint of someone in the UK we get a pretty good deal.... we get gems like this for free Regardless, enjoy it

This site is like a gift that keeps on giving (my red boxes, as if this wasn't evident).... and the footer... I do get why most Remainers would label the site as the "gift that keeps on giving" and I suppose a bit of fun but it does suggest doesn't it that you/they are really looking for as many "told you so" moments as possible? We are indeed fairly close after the "real" brexit so I suppose the losers in the referendum should have their moment to say "told you so" but at some point we do need to think about what is next outside of a "told you so" context. I will happen but just take time.... TBH michaelc it was just funny (to me that is, and I understand why it wouldn't be to others). It wasn't even about "I told you so" or anything else, it just made me laugh. I saw the headline (link posted by jlend I think) and was reminded of my previous post. I haven't even read that article.

This site is like a gift that keeps on giving I guess that's one way of looking at it.
Possibly, just a bitter and twisted remainer, who can't accept that the vote didn't go their way. Far better to spend every waking moment complaining about it rather than trying to resolve whatever problems exist.
hahahaha I knew you'd take that well! Perhaps they just want to run their business as they were promised. Remember this mega-lie... "there will be no non-tariff barriers to trade"
