valerieb has a good point. I read this site nearly every day following the p2p threads I am interested in (5), however I only ever log in if I want to comment, like today, so counting the times I have logged in would give no indication at all of my use of the site. Incidentally I take this opportunity to thank all those very diligent contributors who have helped me to make my lending decisions. Sorry if I messed up the quotes. We didn't even have phones when I was born! Golly -you must be VERY old owlcation.com/humanities/history-of-the-telephone-system-uk

We didn't either, then we moved into a new house when I was about six and a telephone, as I believe it was called in those days, was installed in the hall but it wasn't connected. It took my dad about 2 years to decide he could afford the rental contract but he finally took the plunge. Imagine our excitement when the day eventually arrived for the GPO (that's General Post Office for you youngsters) to come and connect our phone, we were so looking forward to ringing up our friends to tell them that we had a telephone, not that we knew any of their numbers mind. With the phone successfully connected we waited patiently for Father to arrive home and show us how to use it. He came home, walked up to the phone, took a small metal thing out of his pocket and attached it to the front of the phone. He said "that's to stop you lot using it, it costs too much money".............it was a lock! And my teenage daughter complains that she still has an iPhone 5...........oh for goodness sake!

Oh thanks for reminding me about party lines. Ours was and there was a button on the top that you had to press to get the dial tone which only worked if next door were not on the phone. Tell that to the............

I remember my dad using the old finger winding phone while in the tin bath in front of the coal fire, Sunday evenings only, then pork pie and bread and dripping for tea, c1965.

I never meant to start a discussion about how old we are and the history of the telephone. Of course I should have said we didn't have a phone nor did we know anyone who did. I made my first phone call as a girl guide in 1947 from the call box 2 streets away in order to get some badge or other. I do remember being scared stiff of the thing. Golly - logged in twice in one day. That's going to skew the statistics.

That's a great site. Have to say, the choice of word was deliberate as, IMO, the exclamations of yesteryear are so much more civilised and less offensive than those of today. I put some of those into the site (the usual suspects) and their growth in usage in recent decades has been spectacular. But "Golly" suggests I'm still not as old as many38 .

My father was running his business from the house and the telephone kept him in touch with 6 or so large hotels he ran. The Post office told him one day that he was being disconnected while they did some re-wiring... "how long?" "3 months sir, we'll connect you as soon as possible". There was no one to complain to in those days. My father just moved into one of the hotels for 3 months.
I even remember when we were allowed to choose a colour for the phone, they were mud-grey and mud-blue but at least they were not black.

Look on the bright side a whole new generation will be able to experience such nationalised industries efficiency drives when they next elect comrade Corbin, Mcdonnell, Abbott, Thornberry et al, on the negative side your dad would be sent away for a few months re-education - "running a business" what on earth was he thinking, such filthy capitalism lurking in your family history you should be ashamed!

I still have one of those I brought home from an office where it was attached to 'the modem' - high tech indeed. It's a fetching teal colour and matches the bedroom decor nicely, where it sits as my emergency phone that never gets used as I take the mobile up anyway. My 9 year old niece was totally mesmerised by it when she came to stay recently.

My wife's father passed away some 3 years ago now, he was an incessant hoarder, lived in a pre 1900 stone house, end one of a block of 4 with the Jennil (or is it a ginnel?) down the middle, the cot loft and cellar were crammed with rubbi.... stuff. One of the things we found was a black bakelite telephone, took it to the charity shop, never even considered that it might have had some value, it was only 3 years ago, but i wish we had kept it, and some other things as well... Oh well.
