Remember also that if they hadn't renewed, someone else might have picked it up and caused all sorts of havoc.

Renewal may have been set to automatic - with GoDaddy as a new unwitting creditor.

www.collateraluk.com/ is timing out for me, actually. I've been checking it every few days as a matter of curiousity. Resolves fine, though.

Disclaimer: I know all too little about domains, name servers, etc but I hope those more knowledgeable can correct me where necessary. The FAQ released on 11 June 2018 included information regarding the domain name.... ...and we're also aware, from the OP, that the domain was renewed at the end of April 2018. Therefore, what follows may not be relevant to the original www.collateraluk.com site that we knew. A trace of the site executed from the Windows command line... tracert collateraluk.com ...leads to www.liquidweb.com [67.227.226.240] The Liquid Web Terms and Conditions include the following (my bold)... I assume that the actual DB did not actually have to reside on the Liquid Web servers but could of been hosted elsewhere?

I would deduct renewal failed and it actually expired and someone unrelated will now have it
Afternic is typically fetching and reselling expired Domains (it is possible that this is not the case here)

I believe it sold for $610. The domain name was available to buy from 25th May which was one month after it expired and the last record I can find is that there were several bids for it and the highest bid was 510 US dollars a few hours before the auction ended and therefore it seems likely it sold for the sort of figure you mentioned. It appears it was registered with GoDaddy and after it was not renewed they put it up for sale in the usual way and who knows who decided to buy it and why. A speculative buy I assume. Considering how little it costs to renew a domain name for a year it somewhat surprises me that the administrators did not decide to renew it even though of course the domain name is only a web address that can be pointed at any server and in itself there is no content on a domain name but nevertheless it would seem to be undesirable for the domain name to be acquired by a third party in the middle of a company administration because that could muddy the waters and cause confusion if that third-party decided to put malicious or erroneous content on it that could mislead investors. But it is the server where the content resided and that is what needs to be tracked down and the server managers interrogated about finding the database.

<snip>
There were only three or so bidders. The $510 bidder was gazumped in the last few moments by the $610 bidder.
