After 17 years without making a claim Halifax have declined to renew my policy because my house has a thatched roof. Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You may benefit by going to an insurance broker - they're likely to save you time if not money and they may have access to insurers or their products that don't show up on comparison sites or direct.

I suspect you're hoping for a recommendation from another owner of a building with a thatched roof, but Googling "thatched cottage insurance" leads to various companies.

Not as well-known as gocompare and other such sites but I found they comes out with good offers. Then research the companies that offer lower premiums. You may end up paying less for identical cover.

I tried that before posting here but after filling in loads of details on 3 sites each one came up with 'Can't do it on-line please ring us'.

Was this for a thatched house?

Was this for a thatched house? No, it was for insuring a vehicle, but I found the site had more competitive premiums. I just thought it might be worth following up regardless of the object to be insured.

There are lots of thatched houses in villages around here. Most people I know go to a local broker who tends to have more specialised knowledge than the online quote places. I think they charge a £25 arrangement fee but they can offer policies that the quote sheds can't.
