If a bank has automated systems that can stop a credit/debit card at night because they suspect fraud, should the same bank provide automated systems (or people) to allow the cardholder to re-active the card as soon as possible?
You can guess it happened to me but it got me thinking what if that was my only card and what if I was trying to pay for a hotel - I could be left walking the streets! It was 8 hours before I was able to contact the bank and the reason they gave when I queried this was that "...we don't want to disturb our customers at that time..."

I would expect a well tuned individual like you would have at least a couple of bank accounts at least to take advantage of offers. Failing that a credit card or Paypal account (some hotels take that) Smaller B&B happy with cash
I keep a prepaid CC ie. Fairfx ( which is also good when buying from abroad) for emergencies.
Also keep couple of hundred cash just in case.
Worse than that I locked my keys in the car boot (Phaeton). Nobody could get in car without expensive damage. Result 4 hour ride with breakdown service from England to Scotland to get spare all part of the service. (result now have spare pinned to my coat)
Like backing up a hard drive your tale is a good reminder to plan for failure. (Failure to plan is planning to fail)
Thank You

Monzo and Starling banks provide this facility as do Revolut and N26. I use all four and can recommend wholeheartedly

Haha - very kind of you to say so God. I do have other cards but what if they all had those rules and what if they all went the same way at the same time? Yes unlikely but my point is if a bank can stop you accessing your cash by employing fraud detection systems (that protect them more than me) shouldn't they also provide a way to identify "suspicious" transactions are not so without having to wait 8 hours? I know my other banks and cards either provide 24/7 customer service or send a text to my phone asking me to verify etc.
