Just had my renewal quote for house and contents insurance: a whacking 17.5% increase, and I've made no claims for at least six years. Moneysupermarket.com reckons that premiums have actually fallen by 3% in the past year or so.
I guess that all of us know that companies take advantage of loyalty - and apathy - when it comes to existing customers but that hike is excessive. Only a month ago did I reject an invitation from the cashier at my High Street bank to discuss insurance with a colleague with a view to it taking over my insurance and giving me £50. She was a bit sniffy when I said "no thanks", so I'll pop in next week to take up the offer.
I shall shop around, and try to avoid comparison websites that insist on one entering one's email address and phone number. I tried one a few years ago and within minutes of my finishing the comparison I was getting phone calls from individual companies.
IIRC the Government recently announced restrictions on low first premiums.

I've never been hassled (well perhaps once) by followup calls: GDPR requirements I suspect now mean that you should be able to avoid being followed up if you want. Anyways, as I say, in a good few years I've never had that as a problem.

I always enter the false telephone number 01234 567890 if I want to prevent nuisance callbacks from, eg, insurance comparison sites.
I pity the poor sod in Bedford who must be getting all my junk calls all these years!

I pity the poor sod in Bedford who must be getting all my junk calls all these years! I would have thought this number was one that was held back by comms companies. I know when i was a PO/BT linesman in the days of the circular dial i used to use that number to test that a dial was working correctly for all numbers one could dial. (In those days the regulator on the dial was a little bit iffy at times and need a tweak t either speed it up or slow it down.) . . . I just dialled it and it seems it's a BT test announcement perhaps it's an answer machine in Bedford. I must break out my old System X notes from when i was building data structures to see what that number was used for in the mid 80's.
