I've just tried to collect some bags of cement from Wickes, to complete a small building project. Not a single bag in their huge warehouse style store. The manager informed me they've been out of stock for almost four months, owing to a global shortage. It would appear that cement & other building materials are facing severe supply issues.
Not sure if this bodes well for some P2P development projects.

That's an old link but it does seem pretty serious and I wonder what the consequences are likely to be.
As with the plaster drought last year, there are plenty of ebay sellers cashing in and selling at large profit.

I understand people are sharing their sources in hushed tones behind timber yards and the like (got some about 10 days ago). Prices for timber and concrete are through the roof right now; I was looking to cost out a big project and am postponing until things ease up. Had not considered the impact on p2p!

It's undoubtedly a real issue, but...
... P2P networks and their beloved lenders must be licking their lips at this cement shortage. Following on from the excuses they have spent the last few years making of blaming everything on Brexit and COVID, they will now spend the next two years rabbiting on about Cementgate and Timbergate as the reasons for them not giving lenders their money back.

Perhaps it is time to move to non-cementatious concrete
seems to work fine. When shops whinge, just ask them for the proper stuff.

Interesting. I hadn't heard about that... and I need 20 bags of postcrete next weekend...

Cement prices up 10%, timber 20%. So nowhere near as much as here, allegedly. HS2 is getting a lot of blame for absorbing shedloads of supply.

Indeed, in a month. But how much here...? BTW, I was told by our tree surgeon the other day that our local sawmills are standing people down, because they can't get the trees to process...

What was used before cement was invented? cow dung and straw? All the trees must have been used up to make toilet rolls with the panic buying last year if there is a shortage of timber now.

What was used before cement was invented? cow dung and straw? Yes, pretty much... It was the Romans who first used it, after all.
