is it just me or is the entire concept of karate against an imaginary opponent a complete waste.
What next Tennis without the ball and you just imagine where it will go rowing on rowing machines not water.

I did karate for a bit and no, they're not pointless at all. Through them you learn the moves and develop muscle memory - and, importantly, demonstrate control, technique, speed, strength, and power. Lastly, they're an integral part of the grading process (and at higher grades you have to develop and demonstrate your own).
But then again I don't really know the context of your comment. If kata are, say, being used as an Olympic sport, then yes, pretty pointless. Especially when you consider other contact sports...
Lastly, they're not limited to karate. You'll find kata (possibly called something else) in all martial arts. Here's a scene from a film called Ong Bak (Muay Thai boxing):-
Jump to about 13:45 to miss out on the "tutorial".
This next video contains scenes in which people were certainly hurt.

I gave up being interested in the Olympics when they took poetry and architecture were taken out of the programme (look it up (in a book) if you don't believe me).
